Does Balancing Work in WoW? Tier Lists Reveal More Losers than Winners

The initial tier lists for Mythic Plus dungeons in WoW Season 4 indicate that balancing efforts haven’t made much of a difference yet.

Only a few days into the fourth season of WoW Dragonflight, community discussions are already buzzing with the first class performance tier lists. These lists primarily focus on Mythic Plus dungeons, which dominate the attention of most WoW players during the final season.

With the onset of the new season came several adjustments aimed at balancing classes and playstyles. Healers, in particular, underwent significant nerfs in certain areas to align them with the standard. However, these changes haven’t yielded significant improvements, as evident from the latest findings. Despite the considerable weakening of one healer, they still maintain their top position, while the previously weakest healer has made some progress but hasn’t achieved a breakthrough.

Similar patterns emerge among tanks and damage dealers. Those who excelled in Season 3 are off to a strong start in Season 4 as well. This continuity isn’t surprising, given the inertia of player preferences. However, there hasn’t been much alteration in performance levels either.

Sites like U.GG analyze all available logs from Mythic Plus dungeons to calculate average DpS or HpS, as well as playstyle popularity. However, factors like utility, buffs, or other helpful abilities are disregarded. These lists should be approached with caution.

In practice, the lists generally reflect the healing and damage output of corresponding classes and specs. While not perfect, they provide a useful starting point for balancing.

The lists generally align with our experiences, but it’s worth questioning their significance this early in the content cycle. Characters are still acquiring new equipment and are not performing at their peak potential. Nevertheless, recognizing the demand for such lists, we provide them for your consideration.
