Apple added a smarter Focus mode called Reduce Interruptions to iOS 26 to help users get work done and rest without losing sight of important messages. This mode uses Apple Intelligence to decide which notifications are urgent enough to break through the quiet. The result is a single Focus that keeps the phone mostly silent while still allowing truly important messages to reach you.
What it Does
Reduce Interruptions is a Focus mode that runs like other Focus modes, but with one important difference. Apple Intelligence runs a built-in setting that will automatically let priority notifications pass through. That setting is called Intelligent Breakthrough and Silencing, and it is turned on by default and cannot be switched off in this Focus. The design is that machine learning finds a balance between privacy and usefulness while you are trying to concentrate.
When the mode is active, the phone still follows your personal whitelist rules. You can choose which people and which apps are allowed to alert you. Apple Intelligence can then add a small number of additional items it judges to be urgent. An example is that a message must be of higher priority than a meeting is taking place or a change in travel that will involve a time stamp. This aims at minimizing the noise and maintaining safety and timeliness.
How to Control
You access Reduce Interruptions the same way you access any Focus. Open Settings, then tap Focus and select Reduce Interruptions. From there, you can set which people may contact you and which apps may notify you. The main extra setting in this Focus is the non-removable Intelligent Breakthrough and Silencing option. You can still make explicit exceptions for any person or app you trust.
To make people exceptions go into People, then tap Allow Notifications From and pick the contacts you want to always reach you. To add apps, go to Apps,s then tap Allow Notifications From and choose the apps that matter most. You can also pick a home screen and lock screen layout to match this Focus. These choices let you lock down most interruptions while keeping a few critical channels open. You remain in control.
Apple Intelligence makes decisions about ad hoc priority notifications. The system checks message content and context on your device and then decides whether a notification should break through. That keeps the decision local to your iPhone and reduces the need for broad manual lists. The exact signals Apple uses include time-sensitive text and phrases that indicate urgency or safety. Apple has described these features as part of the Apple Intelligence suite.
