Apple asked suppliers to boost output earlier this year because demand surprised the company. Samsung and LG stepped up while BOE struggled with LTPO yield and quality on the panels intended for some iPhone 17 models. The shift means Samsung will now supply many more OLED panels worldwide.

Supply Chain Shift

BOE won partial approval to make screens for the iPhone 17 Pro lineup in China. The approval did not turn into a large global volume. BOE said it would ship more panels, but yields stayed behind expectations. Industry estimates show BOE supplied only a very small share of the iPhone 17 panels. Samsung and LG supplied almost all the rest.

Analysts expected BOE to ship millions of LTPO OLED panels. That target did not materialize. Test runs and factory data showed yields around mid-80 percent for some lines. Samsung and LG run more mature lines. Their yields sit higher, and they can scale faster. Apple chose reliability over spreading orders widely. That decision raised Samsung and LG shares.

Quality and Yields

LTPO is a key technology for modern iPhone screens. It lets the phone change the refresh rate to save battery and to make motion look smooth. Samsung and LG have refined LTPO for years. BOE still faces steps to match that level of consistency. The result is uneven output that Apple could not count on for a global launch.

BOE also has a history of past problems that made Apple cautious. In an earlier cycle, BOE shipped panels with unauthorized circuit changes. That episode slowed Apple approval and left lasting scrutiny. More recently, the U S International Trade Commission opened a trade case that adds legal and geopolitical pressure on BOE. Those factors reduce the chance of rapid order recovery.

Apple’s move to use the Samsung M14 panel in many iPhone 17 models will create a uniform display feel across the line. That uniformity simplifies phone calibration and keeps screen behavior consistent for users. The choice also cuts the risk of visible differences between models sold in different places.

Samsung stands to gain both revenue and leverage. Analysts now expect Samsung Display to raise its share of iPhone 17 panels sharply. LG keeps a steady and respected role. BOE may keep some China market volume, but its global share looks small for now.
