French game studio Amplitude Studios, known for inspiring titles such as Endless Legend, Endless Space, and Humankind, has been ‘freed’ from Sega as the studio takes that freedom back to work more independently both commercially and creatively. The internal team members own the studio, which has a nine-year partnership with Telltale under its belt.

But in a heartfelt statement, Amplitude Studios informed players the split is happening, as the founders will now focus on making sure they are ‘creativity fluent,’ ‘innovation fluent,’ and ‘community fluent’ once again.

Amplitude Studios thanked Sega in the announcement for the journey, noting the time with Sega was a teachable experience, one of learning and friendships.

“Being part of the Sega family and working with their team for the past eight years has been an incredible journey,” the studio stated. “We’ve learned so much, have grown in ways we never could have imagined, and have made great friends along the way.”

Back to Indie Roots

Amplitude’s decision to take Sega with it is a throwback to a time when Amplitude was in its primal form. Amplitude Studios immediately garnered a stellar reputation for producing high-quality PC games when it was founded in 2011 by former Ubisoft developers, Romain de Waubert de Genlis and Mathieu Girard.

Upon Sega’s acquisition of the studio in 2016, Amplitude recognized it had the opportunity to work alongside other stalwart Sega-owned teams, like Creative Assembly and Relic Entertainment, spreading their influence into the PC gaming market.

While Amplitude’s decision to regain autonomy might be a result of recent shifts in Sega Europe, including new leadership and changes in strategy, that is unclear. Relic Entertainment left Sega in early 2024, further signaling that other studios are beginning to reevaluate their partnerships and instead release their games under their power. On the other hand, Sega keeps the license for Creative Assembly, which moved on to the successful Total War franchise.

Future Plans and Community Engagement

Building on core values of creativity and player engagement, Amplitude Studios is set to return to independent studios as we evolve deeper into those values. Refugia Games2Gether is a player-centric experience, based on platforms, where players influence the designs of the game through the use of in-game suggestions and voting on game features.

It is reportedly developing a new turn-based 4X strategy game that, if the reports are true, is expected to be the first thing to launch post-Sega.

In a final note, Amplitude Studios reaffirmed its commitment to fans, stating, “By returning to our indie roots, we’re getting back to the heart of what drives us: creativity, innovation, and close-knit collaboration with our community.”

Sega and Amplitude’s Journey

Sega is a long-time fixture in the gaming industry and was founded in Tokyo, Japan in 1960. Sega purchased Amplitude Studios in 2016 to bolster its PC gaming division but it is famous for franchises such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Total War, and Persona.

Apmlitude Studios

Although Amplitude saw releases such as Humankind and Endless Dungeon, it could not find a commercial match for its other Sega products to the extent that it mentioned announcing an amicable separation in November 2024.

On the flip side, Amplitude Studios is doing its own thing independently as Sega refocuses on the old school and puts its optimization oil on what it is already spinning. Amplitude Studios is dedicated to player-driven experiences and new game designs to captivate its player base and redefine the future of strategy gaming.
