Sony has rolled out a significant PlayStation 5 system update packed with new features, including adaptive charging support, a redesigned widget hub, and expanded Remote Play settings. This update, which aims to enhance both performance and user experience, is now available globally with several standout features, particularly focused on power management and controller care.

Adaptive Charging for Battery Protection

One of the key features introduced is adaptive charging, designed to protect and extend the life of PlayStation controllers’ batteries. The new feature, initially available for the PS5 Slim and the upcoming $700 PS5 Pro, monitors and automatically adjusts the power supplied to controllers when they’re connected to the console’s USB ports. This intelligent system ensures that charging is tailored to the controller’s current battery levels, helping to preserve battery life in the long run.

It is important to note that adaptive charging works with the PS5-era DualSense and DualSense Edge wireless controllers, PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, and the Access adaptive controller kit. If no controller is connected, the console automatically cuts power to the USB port shortly after entering rest mode, saving even more energy.

A Redesigned Welcome Hub and More Features

Aside from the adaptive charging feature, Sony is also introducing a new Welcome hub in the update. This customizable widget hub allows users to easily monitor console storage, accessory battery levels, and friends lists directly from the home screen. According to Sony, this Welcome hub replaces the old Explore tab, which was only available in the U.S. The Verge reports that this revamped feature will be available to “select players” in the U.S. region first, before its global release in the coming weeks.

Additionally, users can now create personalized 3D audio profiles for headphones or earbuds, enabling a more immersive gaming experience. Adjustable Remote Play settings also allow for fine-tuning access permissions, making it easier to manage usage across different users.

Expanded Party Sharing and Mobile Integration

Sony is making it easier for PS5 users to share voice chat invitations with players outside their friends lists. A party link sharing feature is being added, allowing users to send chat invitations across messaging and social media platforms. This feature will be available in the coming weeks as part of a broader PlayStation App update, letting users share party links directly from their mobile devices. With this comprehensive update, Sony aims to deliver an improved, more customizable experience for PS5 players, while also addressing long-standing concerns about controller battery longevity.
