Sony and AMD shared an early look at graphics technology that may shape the next PlayStation generation. The companies said the work is still in simulation and that public hardware is years away. The preview focuses on three core areas that could lift visual quality and efficiency in future consoles. The work also hints at strong benefits for smaller devices that must run on limited power.
New GPU features
Sony and AMD showed a set of ideas that aim to make ray tracing and path tracing faster and more efficient. One idea is a set of task-specific cores that take on ray tracing work so the main GPU engines can do other things. AMD calls these Radiance Cores. The cores handle the heavy math for light simulation and let the rest of the chip spend more time on shaders and textures. The change could raise frame rates when scenes use complex lighting.

The team also highlighted improvements in upscaling and cache systems. AMD is evolving its image upscaling tech. That tech helps the GPU render at a lower cost and then rebuild a sharper frame. The combined approach of dedicated cores and better upscaling aims to deliver richer scenes with less power draw. Sony said the result would let developers aim for higher detail or steadier frame rates, depending on the game.
Compression is another area of focus. Sony and AMD described a pipeline-wide compression method that they call Universal Compression. The idea is to compress more types of GPU data in flight. More efficient compression frees memory bandwidth that the GPU can use for higher-quality textures and more complex effects. The net effect is more detail for a given hardware budget.
All of these ideas remain in the research phase. The companies showed performance in controlled tests and in simulations. That means the real-world results will depend on the final silicon and on software that adapts to the new hardware. Even so, the work gives a clear view of how Sony aims to push visual realism while keeping power use in check.
Handheld performance gains
The same building blocks that help a high-end console also help portable devices—dedicated cores for light work separate power-hungry tasks from the general rendering engine. Better compression reduces bandwidth needs. Smarter upscaling lowers the cost of rendering each frame. Together, these moves can shrink the power draw for a given visual target.

That is the reason a future PlayStation handheld could benefit. A handheld must balance battery life and heat with image quality. If a GPU can offload ray tracing to a specialized unit and reuse cached results across frames with an AI-aided cache, then the device can show complex scenes with less energy. Sony already added a Power Saver mode to its current hardware to scale performance. The research from AMD could make such modes more efficient while preserving visual fidelity.
The work also suggests that AMD will embed similar features into desktop GPUs. That means game developers may write engines that assume the presence of Radiance Cores and the other pipeline improvements. Over time, games could use those features on console and on PC.
