Apple is developing a cheaper MacBook to launch in early 2026. The first report that gained wide publicity was by Bloomberg. The writer who covered the plan said the laptop will be the main Mac launch early in the year. The same source linked that timing to Apple software cycles and to other Mac updates.

Expected Launch Window

According to Bloomberg, Apple will probably release the model in the first half of 2026. The report linked certain Mac releases with the macOS 26.3 release cycle that continues till March. The same newsletter noted a product event planned at the start of the month, but left the subject unclear.

Other outlets have tracked the same timing and have added more context. Trade and supply chain analysts have said that Apple has placed orders large enough to suggest a mass market push. That forecast covers millions of units for the full year of 2026.

Hardware and Specs

Reports point to a compact screen of around 13 inches and to the use of an iPhone-class chip inside the chassis. The chip that most rumors name is the A18 Pro. That part is already in high-level iPhone discussions for performance and efficiency. Mac-focused sites and accessory analysts noted that the A18 Pro could match or exceed some older Mac chips in select tasks.

The move to a phone-class processor is notable for two reasons. First, it can lower the bill of materials. Second, it can place a fast and efficient chip into a thin light frame. Analysts wrote that Apple could tune the system and macOS to take full advantage of the chip. The reports also noted that Apple may cut or change other parts of the build to hit a lower price point.

Price and Supply Forecast

The rumored price range that has been going around is close to $700. That tier would place MacBook in a different competitive space in comparison to Windows-based laptops of low price and Chromebooks. One source that aggregated industry leaks suggested a spring window with prices around $699 to $750. Shipment forecasts to the supply chain run in the single-digit millions for 2026.

The lower price is likely to require trade-offs. Commentators and analysts expect Apple to make careful cuts to reach that number. The changes that have been suggested include limiting memory to 8 gigabytes and reducing the number of ports. The display quality could also be a place for cost savings. Those steps would make the laptop cheaper to build and to ship.

Market Positioning and Strategy

Apple has two clear goals for a lower-cost MacBook. The first goal is to sell a notebook that can compete with cheap Windows laptops and with Chromebooks in schools and in price-conscious markets. The second objective is to provide a point of access into the broader Mac ecosystem. Analysts believe there will be a target market of individuals who like Apple laptops but are concerned with the price.

Education buyers pose a special challenge. The base iPad is often priced to serve education at scale. That device can be offered at a very low net cost to schools. Commentators noted that Apple will need a clear value case to displace entrenched Chromebook choices in the classroom. The new MacBook would have to balance price and feature set for that market.
