A key feature of the AirPods is the integrated H2 chip, which, along with new membranes, is designed to deliver enhanced sound quality.
One new feature is the ability to accept or reject calls using head gestures. This could be especially useful in situations where speaking is impractical or impossible. It remains to be seen how intuitive and reliable this gesture control will be in practice.
Extended functionality and health aspects
Another significant update is the introduction of Active Noise Cancellation in the second version of the AirPods 4. This feature, previously available only in the Pro models, is enabled by new microphones and improved audio chips. Additionally, the headphones offer a transparency mode and adaptive audio, allowing you to switch between modes automatically.
The AirPods 4 now offer expanded charging options, including wireless charging, and feature a speaker in the charging case, similar to the AirPods Pro. Pricing varies based on features, with the noise-cancelling model being offered at a higher price.
Apple has also announced updates to the AirPods Max. The over-ear headphones will come in new color options and will include a USB-C port. Other than these cosmetic and technical updates, the basic model appears to remain the same.
The new devices are set to be available on September 20, 2024.
An interesting aspect of the announcement is the upcoming update for the AirPods Pro 2. Apple plans to add new health features that will enable the AirPods Pro 2 to function as hearing aids, thanks to a forthcoming firmware update.
The new health features of the AirPods Pro also include preventive measures. For example, they can be used as earplugs to block out noise, which could be very useful for people who work or live in noisy environments.
A particularly interesting addition is the ability to conduct a hearing test directly through the AirPods Pro. This test, similar to one performed by an ENT doctor, allows users to check their hearing ability from the comfort of their home.
