Steam Reviews Get Smarter With PC Specs and Performance Data

Valve has begun testing a new feature that makes Steam reviews more helpful for PC gamers. Steam is rolling the tool out in its latest beta. The change asks reviewers to attach a profile of their hardware so readers can judge how a game ran on similar machines. The update aims to cut the guesswork that often hides behind short reviews.

Many users already type their specs into review text. That practice can be slow and repetitive. The new feature turns that effort into a reusable profile. Reviewers can check a box to attach a saved spec profile to a review. The profile includes key items such as processor graphics card memory and storage. After saving the profile it can be used again to review in future hence there is no need to type the same information every time.

How it Works

This tool lives in the review form on the store page. A simple option labeled Attach PC specs to this review appears in the right hand panel. When a gamer ticks the box they can create a new profile or choose a profile already saved to their account. The profile is reusable and it stays private to the Steam account until the user attaches it to a review. That design keeps the flow quick and grants control to the reviewer.

The beta also adds a frame rate sharing option for SteamOS users. The system can collect anonymous gameplay frame rate data to help Valve improve compatibility and to guide Deck Verified ratings on the storefront. Frame rate data is stored without a link to the Steam account. Valve uses the hardware profile to group similar machines so the aggregated results reflect real experiences on specific setups.

Privacy and Data

The announcement states that personal details are not attached to the frame rate data. The stats are anonymous and they are linked only to the kind of hardware being used. Players who do not want to share performance metrics can opt out. The tech makes it possible to see how a title runs on many setups without revealing who ran the test.

Reviewers who attach specs still control what they post. The saved profiles appear as a tool to help other players and to provide context for star ratings and written feedback. The change aims to reduce cases where a short review says a game runs poorly but does not explain the test machine or settings. With clearer context new buyers can make better choices about performance expectations.
