Apple is holding early talks with Indian suppliers about moving some chip packaging and assembly work into India. The conversations are described as preliminary, but they show Apple is looking for more local partners to support its growing iPhone manufacturing there.
This shift would not be about making Apple silicon wafers. Apple still relies on established foundries for the highest-end chips. The likely first move is packaging and testing work that sits after wafer fabrication and before final assembly. Local firms that build assembly and test facilities are being discussed.

What Apple is Considering
Apple talked with a unit of the Murugappa Group that is building an assembly and test site in Sanand, Gujarat. The supplier under discussion is named CG Semi in the reports. The company is working on a facility that would handle packaging and testing rather than wafer fabrication. That kind of work is often called OSAT in the industry.
The reasoning is simple. Moving packaging tasks closer to the iPhone assembly lines can save time and lower costs. It can also reduce the number of cross-border shipments for fragile parts and give Apple more flexibility in its supply chain planning. Local packaging would also help Apple widen its manufacturing footprint outside China.
Industry and Government Context
India has made semiconductor manufacturing a national priority, and it has begun to attract large projects. One high-profile project is a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn to build a wafer and display driver chip plant in Uttar Pradesh. That project received government support and aims to make display driver chips and scale to tens of thousands of wafers per month in the coming years. The HCL Foxconn project is a sign that India wants to build parts of the chip supply chain domestically.
Local chip packaging would be a more incremental and realistic first step for Apple than building full foundry capacity in India. Packaging and test work have lower threshold requirements than wafer fabs, and they can be brought online faster. Several Indian groups are investing in assembly and test skills at the moment, which could make them viable partners for Apple over time.
What This Could Mean for iPhone Assembly
Moving packaging work into India would help Apple shorten lead times. Components were to be transported between local plants rather than being imported. That would save on logistics expenses and minimize the exposure to the disruption along the long shipping routes. More onshore packaging may also help Apple ramp production locally to meet demand in key markets.
