Apple may release a base M5 MacBook Pro before the year ends. Code in a macOS Tahoe build shows a device with the identifier J704. That entry matches the pattern used for prior Mac updates and suggests that a base M5 MacBook Pro is in testing now.

Launch Timing Details

The macOS Tahoe build 26.0.2 contains a J704 entry that appears tied to a new Mac model. This is the clearest software clue so far that a base M5 MacBook Pro is near. Apple has used similar internal identifiers in the past to denote new models.

Federal filings add to that picture. The United States FCC listings show new Apple model numbers that match what insiders expect for M5 era MacBook and iPad devices. The FCC records are not an official product announcement. The filings do show that Apple has devices in testing that regulators have logged.

Leaks and supply notes suggest a rollout that is split across time. The base M5 MacBook Pro looks like it could arrive first. The more powerful M5 Pro and M5 Max models are linked to macOS 26.3 in the code. That timing points toward a later release window that may fall in early 2026.

Public reporting on the M5 family also references earlier iPad leaks. The M5 chip in the iPad Pro leaks shows gains in graphics performance and a larger L2 cache compared with the M4 family. That change may translate into faster graphics on the base Mac model, even if the CPU core counts remain similar. These details come from hands-on and benchmark leaks tied to the M5 iPad.

What Buyers Should Know

The M5 base chip may keep a similar CPU core count from prior leaks while improving GPU power and cache. That will make the base M5 MacBook Pro a sensible upgrade for many users. Users who do basic creative work and who want better on-device graphics may find the new base model useful right away.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max models are different. Multiple reports say Apple will move to a chip design that separates CPU and GPU blocks. That change may need advanced packaging from TSMC. The new packaging process, named SoIC MH is more complex to scale. That complexity is the main reason analysts give for a later ship date for those chips.

A staggered release gives buyers options. The early base model release will let buyers who need a Mac now upgrade to newer silicon. Buyers who need the largest CPU and GPU counts should wait for the Pro and Max models. Those later chips may offer higher core counts and different trade-offs that matter for heavy video work and large compute jobs.

Apple’s public schedule for macOS updates also informs the timeline. The macOS 26.3 entry in the leaked code lines up with a later software release. That fact makes it likely that the higher-tier MacBook Pro models will arrive after the base model and after macOS 26.3 ships. This pattern matches other Apple rollouts where specific hardware is tied to a matching software release.
