Apple now offers ProMotion across the iPhone 17 line. ProMotion is Apple’s speak for a variable refresh rate. The display can move between low rates for still images and high rates for motion. That lets the screen feel smooth and also saves battery.
On paper, the change is clear. A display that can go to higher rates can make scrolling and animations look smoother. It can also lower the refresh rate when the image is static, and that saves power. The physics and the benefits are real.
Many people will not notice much difference in daily life. On a phone, the screen is small. Most apps are not designed to take full advantage of very high refresh. Casual games and basic use feel fine on older displays. For typical tasks like web browsing, messaging, and watching most videos, the change is subtle.

How ProMotion works
ProMotion changes the number of times the screen redraws itself every second. That number can be as low as a single digit or as high as one hundred and twenty times per second. The system raises the rate when the content moves a lot. It lowers the rate when the image is stable.
The display can also match the frame rate of the video, so motion looks natural. The combination of variable refresh and content matching is what makes animations feel fluid. The feature also helps battery life because the screen usually runs at a lower rate when nothing much is moving.
Why it matters less
On tablets and laptops, the larger display makes a bigger visual difference. On those devices, ProMotion also helps when editing video or when using pro apps that draw many frames. On a phone, the payoff is smaller for most people.
Game developers can use higher rates. Very demanding mobile games can feel smoother at one hundred and twenty frames per second. Those games are a minority. Most mobile titles still target lower frame rates to reach more devices.
Always-on displays reduce refresh to very low rates to save power. That is useful. It does not change how most people use their phones during the day. If a feature must be the only reason to upgrade, then it is a weak reason for most users.

Practical view for buyers
This is in case smooth scrolling is needed, and the iPhone 17 will provide it. In case battery life under light to normal use is of importance, then the variable rate is of benefit as well. Assuming that you do not play high frame rate games and that you alternate between various screens and devices, then the upgrade to ProMotion alone is probably not something that will make you feel you need. Designers and power users can like the technology. The change will not be a revolution for many people.
