Microsoft Kills Editing in 365 Copilot App for iPhone and iPad

Microsoft will remove the ability to edit documents, spreadsheets, and slides inside the 365 Copilot app on iPhone starting on September 15, 2025. The same change will come to iPad in the weeks after that date. After the change, the Copilot app will show files and let users ask questions about them. Any edit must be done in the standalone Word, Excel, or PowerPoint app.

What Microsoft announced and why it matters
Microsoft described the move as a way to offer a streamlined file preview experience. The company said Copilot will remain the place to read, summarize, and generate content with AI. Microsoft said editing will now live in the native Office apps, which will remain responsible for formatting formulas, charts, and final saves. This is the official framing of the change, and it explains the design choice.

What will change on iPhone and iPad
From September 15, users who open a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file inside Copilot will see a banner that asks them to install the separate app. The Copilot app will still show the file, and it will still let users run Copilot chat commands. The user will not be able to tap a pencil icon and edit text or change a cell inside Copilot. The workflow will require a switch to the dedicated app for any modifications.

Practical impact on workflows and storage
Users who relied on Copilot for quick edits will now need to install one or more Office apps. Word for iPhone is a large download on the App Store, and in many regions it is roughly five hundred megabytes. Installing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint will consume more storage than keeping a single app that handles basic edits. For students, professionals, and small teams, this adds friction and may slow down quick edits on the move.

Compatibility and rollout details
Microsoft will begin with the iPhone and then extend the change to the iPad. The company has posted guidance about the Microsoft 365 Copilot app transition and how users should install the other apps. IT administrators and users on managed devices should read Microsoft support pages because the rollout may be staged, and some tenants will see the change earlier or later, depending on update policies.

Security and feature trade offs
The change separates AI-driven tasks from final document edits. That separation can reduce the risk of accidental overwrites inside Copilot while making clear which app owns the user content. At the same time, the split may break quick edit loops, and it may add friction for users who want to move from a generated draft to a final file quickly. The exact behavior for features such as autosave, track changes, and advanced Excel functions will remain inside the dedicated apps.

What users should do now
Check your iPhone and iPad for storage and update space. If you expect to edit files on the go, install Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in advance so you can switch quickly. Review Microsoft help pages and update policies in your organization if you use work accounts. If a compact workflow matters, consider whether the new arrangement affects your device usage and plan accordingly.
