US Now Orders Chrome Users to Update by June 5 Amid Hack Threat

The United States government has issued an important warning for everyone who uses Google Chrome. All federal workers must update their Chrome browser to the newest version before June 5, 2025. If they do not update, they must stop using Chrome completely. This warning comes because hackers are actively using a security hole in Chrome to steal people’s private information, like passwords and bank details.

Though the rule affects government employees, experts still recommend that everyone using Chrome upgrade immediately. Again, if Chrome users worldwide do not act, the security problem could affect them all.

Why This Update Matters

Google found dangerous problems in Chrome that hackers can use to break into computers. Two of these problems are especially serious. One is called “use after free” and affects how Chrome shows website pictures and videos. The other is called “out of bounds write” and affects Chrome’s core engine that runs websites.

These problems let hackers take control of your browser. They could see your emails, steal your social media logins, or even get into your online banking. Earlier this month, hackers were already using one of these security holes before Google fixed it.

How to Protect Yourself

Updating Chrome is easy and takes only a few minutes. Here are the simple steps everyone should follow.

First, open your Chrome browser. Look for three small dots in the top right corner of your screen and click them. Then find where it says “Settings” and click on that. Next, click on “About Chrome” usually found at the bottom of the menu. Chrome will now check for updates by itself.

An “Update” button will appear if it finds your computer has version 137.0.7151.55/56. Go ahead and click it. Upon finishing the update, close Chrome and then open it up a second time. The key is that the security measures only become active after you relaunch the browser.

What Happens If You Wait Too Long

After June 5, not installing updates could put your information at risk. Hackers could break into your online accounts. Such attacks may give them access to your personal messages, control over your email, or let them take your money through your bank account.

For government workers, there are serious consequences. Their agencies might not allow them to use computers until they update Chrome. But regular people could lose important information or money.

A Real Danger Right Now

Security researchers discovered that the main security hole lets hackers see secret codes in website addresses. When you visit your bank’s website, there might be a special code in the web address that proves it’s really you. Hackers have found a way to steal these codes using hidden tricks on bad websites.

This means if you click on a dangerous link, hackers could get codes that let them into your bank account or email. They would not even need your password. Google admits hackers are already doing this to some people.

Why Restarting Chrome Matters

Many people forget this important last step. After updating Chrome, you must close the browser and open it again. If you do not do this, the security fix will not work. Even though Chrome saves your open tabs and restores them when you reopen it, some people worry about losing work. But staying safe is more important than keeping tabs open for a few extra minutes.

Keeping Your Family Safe Online

This security update is especially important for families. Children doing homework online, parents paying bills, or grandparents reading news could all be at risk. Taking five minutes to update Chrome could prevent months of trouble dealing with stolen accounts or identity theft.

Google works hard to fix these problems quickly. But it is up to every person who uses Chrome to install the update and restart their browser. Think of it like locking your front door at night. It is a simple habit that keeps your digital home safe from intruders.
