It’s no secret that Apple, in addition to a foldable iPhone, also plans to launch an iPad with a similar design. This has been suggested by various rumors over time, and the latest information from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman confirms that we could soon see a tablet with a folding screen. Gurman has shared new details about this rumored foldable iPad.

According to Gurman, Apple is already finalizing the design of the foldable iPad, which could arrive in the next few years. The company aims for the device to look like “a single, uninterrupted piece of glass.” To achieve this, they are working on a nearly invisible fold design when the device is fully open. Gurman confirms that Apple has made progress in this area, but he notes that “it is too early” to determine if the company can fully eliminate the common issues with flexible screens.
Speaking of the screen, Gurman reports that Apple is working on a 20-inch foldable iPad – a much larger size compared to current models, but one that makes sense if the screen can be folded in half. This device would be compact enough to fit inside a backpack.
The rumored 20-inch foldable iPad will run iPadOS, but the interface will include some macOS elements. However, Gurman clarifies that it won’t be a “hybrid iPad/Mac.” He likely means it will include features from macOS or elements with an interface similar to Apple’s desktop operating system. Regardless, the foldable iPad will also support accessories like the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard.
When Will the Foldable iPad Arrive?
Don’t expect a device like this until next year. Gurman suggests that the 20-inch foldable iPad could be released as early as 2028. It won’t be cheap, but its price would be justified by the features it would offer and the design advancements, especially if Apple succeeds in eliminating the crease caused by the hinge.
In addition, Apple is also working on a clamshell-style foldable iPhone with a larger screen than the iPhone 16 Pro Max, as recently reported by the Wall Street Journal. Although details are limited, it is expected to launch in 2026, before the foldable iPad. However, it is still unclear if Apple will be able to meet these goals.
