The PlayStation Portal, Sony’s portable gaming device, has received a game-changing update: cloud streaming. The new feature is also all about allowing players to play select PS5 games streamed directly from Sony’s servers. The PlayStation Portal at first only streamed games via Wi-Fi from a paired PS5. However, with the recent system update which was rolled out yesterday, players can now stream games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog without having to use a console.

PlayStation Plus Premium members can access the beta, and this feature is exclusive to them only. For anyone keen to play on the go and experience the best games attainable this is an exciting development.

What’s Included in the Cloud Streaming Beta?

PlayStation’s beta of cloud streaming offers a peek at the future of PlayStation gaming. Subscribers can stream over 120 PS5 games, including popular titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Monster Hunter Rise, Miles Morales, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Its maximum streaming quality gets up to 1080p at 60 frames per second, which gives you a nice, smooth, immersive gameplay.

DualSense wireless controller features like haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and motion sensing will be available to PlayStation Portal users. It also saves cloud data so gameplay transitions smoothly between local and streamed.

Connectivity Requirements

Players need a stable internet connection to experience cloud streaming. For 720p, 7 Mbps is the minimum speed required for download, and for 1080p, 13 Mbps.

Setting up the beta is simple: update the PlayStation Portal to the latest system software, then jump into settings and activate Cloud Streaming, then head to the game catalog right from the home screen.

Current Limitations

Not all features are available in this is an experimental beta. Party voice chat, Game Trials, and in-game commerce are not supported. You cannot stream PS4 or PS3 games, and child accounts would not be able to access cloud streaming.

These limitations are likely going to change depending on how Sony refines the experience with feedback, they have assured fans.

Audio Upgrades and Device Settings

The PlayStation Portal audio settings, too, get an improvement in the update. New minimum volume levels can be set using a new speaker adjustment feature. Players can also adjust PlayStation Link device settings from within the Portal’s menu, dialing in volume and sidetone settings.

Supported Countries

The beta is available to users across a broad range of countries, including the US, UK, Japan, and a number of European countries. The aim, of course, is to receive a lot of feedback from a very diverse user base to fine-tune the service.

End Note

Sony is redefining portable gaming with cloud streaming on the PlayStation Portal. This new possibility for the pursuit of PS5 quality games without a console. While this beta does not have all of the bells and whistles that certain rival console apps boast, it is a big step forward in expanding the PlayStation ecosystem.
