Apple has officially released iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, introducing exciting new features for iPhone and iPad users. One of the most anticipated upgrades is the introduction of RCS messaging, which significantly improves communication between iPhone and Android users. As reported by The Verge, RCS allows for smoother messaging with the ability to share high-resolution photos and videos, use read receipts, and see typing indicators. However, Android messages will still appear in green bubbles.

The addition of RCS messaging means iPhone users will now have an enhanced experience when communicating with Android users, narrowing the gap between the two ecosystems. Alongside this, iMessage is receiving a boost with new text effects, formatting options, and even the ability to schedule messages for future delivery. For those in remote areas, the ability to send messages via satellite is also being introduced.

Customization and Home Updates

Another major highlight of iOS 18 is the much-requested homepage customization feature. Users can now rearrange, resize, and change the color of app icons and widgets, allowing for a more personalized iPhone experience. Apple’s Photos app has also undergone a design overhaul, while the Control Center has been revamped to improve usability.

Moreover, iOS 18 brings an update to the Home app. With this release, iPhone users can control Matter devices locally without the need for a home hub. However, you will need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer to manage Thread devices. Guests can now also be granted access to locks, garage doors, and alarm systems. Apple has also hinted at a hands-free unlocking feature, but no compatible smart locks are available at this time.

iPadOS 18 Finally Adds Calculator

On the iPad side, Apple has addressed a long-standing omission. With iPadOS 18, users will finally have access to a built-in calculator app, a feature absent from the iPad since its launch over a decade ago. To get the new update, head to Settings, select General > Software Update, and follow the instructions to install iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 on your device.

iOS 18.1 AI Features Coming Soon

While iOS 18 introduces plenty of new features, some exciting tools will be arriving in iOS 18.1. Apple is expected to roll out advanced AI features in the public beta this October, including tools for text rewriting, summarization, image generation via Image Playground, and a more conversational Siri experience. Stay tuned for the full launch of these AI capabilities later this year. Apple’s iOS 18 is a significant step forward for iPhone and iPad users, combining cutting-edge messaging improvements, enhanced customization options, and a preview of future AI-powered tools. Be sure to download the update and experience all the new features for yourself.
