Google is preparing to rebrand its “Switch to Android” app for iOS, giving it a new name and additional features to help users migrating from Apple to Android. The app, which facilitates data transfer from iPhones to Android devices, could soon be called “Android Switch,” and it’s set to introduce support for iOS 18’s locked and hidden apps.

Pixel 9 and iPhone 16 series come out almost at the same time, and many people are wondering whether they should jump from one system to another to try new things. Apple and Google have made it easy for users to transfer their data by providing tools for that purpose, however essential for the person who is transitioning from the iPhone to Android, there is the “Switch to Android” app on iOS.

However, a new APK teardown of Google’s Data Transfer Tool (an Android system app that controls data recovery) recently hinted that major changes are on the horizon.

A Name Change on the Horizon

The APK teardown highlighted by Android Authority suggests that the company is developing a new look for “Switch to Android” iOS app. This means that in the future updates, this app may be called “Android Switch.” The name change is not just cosmetic; the app is expected to provide improved data migration in the future.

The update of Data Transfer Tool, v1.0.667928924, introduced some of these changes that were expected to happen in the future. Once the migration process is started, the Android users will come across the new branding Android Switch as depicted by the following screenshots.

New Features to Support iOS 18

One of the most notable improvements is that the rebranded app will support iOS 18 devices, including the ability to transfer locked and hidden apps. These apps, introduced with iOS 18, allow iPhone users to secure or conceal certain applications. When migrating data, these hidden and locked apps will also be transferred to Android devices. However, users will need to manually lock or hide the apps again on their Android phone due to differences in how each platform handles app security.

Additionally, the app will issue a warning related to WhatsApp data transfers, advising users to unlock or reveal any hidden WhatsApp chats on their iPhones before starting the migration. Failing to do so could result in incomplete WhatsApp data transfer.

Smooth Transition for iPhone Users

As iOS 18 is set to be released next week across all supported iPhones, this update to the Switch to Android app ensures a smooth transition for users looking to switch from iOS to Android. While these features are not live yet, they are expected to roll out soon as part of Google’s efforts to make switching platforms as seamless as possible.
