A new set of rumors says Apple is testing a clamshell foldable iPhone alongside the book like foldable that is expected in 2026. The claim comes from a Weibo account that shares supply chain leaks and prototype notes. Fixed Focus Digital raised the idea that prototypes exist. The report also stressed that Apple has not yet decided to move the design into mass production.

Early reports have long pointed to a book like iPhone Fold that opens into a larger display. Many observers expect that model to arrive in the fall of 2026. The clamshell design would fold the screen inward and would leave a compact outer shell when closed. That style is already common at other phone makers. Samsung and Motorola build clamshell models that show the trade offs between pocket size and screen area.

Clamshell Tests Continue

Prototype work and internal testing are normal steps before Apple ships a new device. The company has studied multiple hinge designs and multiple display laminates over many years. A clamshell foldable makes sense as a complement to a book like Fold. It keeps a smaller footprint while still offering a modern flexible display. The external display on a clamshell can show notifications widgets and quick camera controls without unfolding. That can be useful for people who want a compact phone.

Trade offs matter. A clamshell may place more stress near the hinge joint when the closed shell flexes. The outer display area must resist scratches and impact while still being thin enough to fold reliably. Battery capacity can be smaller in clamshell models because the device is physically smaller. Software design Companies like Apple will compare those limitations to the price customers will pay to acquire the products and the duration of life parts will work in the real world.

What to Expect

Observers who follow Apple say the company will test both form factors to learn which users prefer. Some reports and analyst notes say the book like Fold will be first. Then Apple may watch consumer response and then decide whether a clamshell makes sense to build at scale. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has previously written that Apple is studying multiple folding designs and that the firm could choose one or both. According to Mark Gurman, Apple tends to prototype numerous ideas and make them narrow.

The final decision would also be determined by technical partners and suppliers. Apple must have thin flexible displays with strong hinges with protective coating and small batteries. Production yields must be high enough to match Apple quality and to meet price targets. Supply chain sources and prototype tests determine whether production volumes make the economics work.

Clamshell vs. Book Design

A clamshell iPhone would be easier to slip into a pocket. It could offer a useful outer display for glanceable items. That outer area might support widgets and brief interactions with apps. The book like Fold would give more usable screen for multitasking video and creative work. The two designs will involve new cases and also new accessory ecosystems. Buyers who retain their phones over a long period will be concerned with repair cost and durability.

Apple will likely tune iOS for each shape. A clamshell experience may lean into quick actions and tight widget surfaces. A book like setup will need multi window controls and split view improvements. Developers will have to test layouts for both kinds of displays. Apple may offer a software layer that makes it easier for apps to adjust across fold types.

How Leaks Without Proof

Weibo leaks can bring early signals. They can also repeat rumors and guesswork. The best image is generally that of several different sources, and of reporters of good reputation, with a record of scoops. Apple is yet to declare any plans of folding. The company often tests many hardware pathways without shipping them. The final product set may differ from the prototypes that circulate online.
