Aliro is a new cross platform smart lock standard that is set to arrive in the first quarter of 2026. The standard shall be enabling trusted phones and wearables to serve as digital keys to smart locks. Connectivity Standards Alliance has reached a final verification milestone and public launch is scheduled at the beginning of 2026.
What is Aliro
Aliro is a credential and communication protocol for smart locks. It is designed so that a smartphone or a wearable can become a secure key. The goal is to make it easy for households that use different devices to share the same lock system. The standard supports near field communication UWB and Bluetooth low energy so phones can connect directly to locks without the internet. This local connection can let a door unlock automatically when a resident approaches.
How it Works
A smart lock that follows the Aliro rules will accept credentials from an approved phone or watch. The lock and the device can talk using NFC or Bluetooth LE. Some Aliro locks will also use ultrawide band for better proximity sensing and for secure hands free unlock. A home hub remains useful for remote unlock and for adding locks to automated scenes in a home app. The plan is for Aliro to work across Apple and Android ecosystems so both iPhone and Android users can use the same locks and share access easily.
Aliro has backing from major platform companies. Apple Google and Samsung are listed supporters of the standard. The alliance says industry partners such as Level Kwikset Nuki and Schlage have announced plans to adopt Aliro. The combined support should speed up adoption and make it simpler for buyers to mix and match locks and phones.
When to Expect
According to the projections of the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the initial draft of the Aliro specification is expected in the market in early 2026. Vendors will need months to add Aliro firmware and to ship new models. Some brands have said they will add firmware updates to existing models where the hardware allows it. Real world availability will vary by manufacturer and by region. Over the next two years a growing number of locks should offer Aliro support.
