Apple may be preparing a high-end MacBook Pro that adds touch input and a new display type. It is reported that the machine will have an OLED screen and hole-punch camera. The model will be released towards the end of 2026 or in early 2027.
Apple has been against the concept of having touch in the Mac laptops. Company leaders have said that touch works best on tablets. Recent patent grants show Apple has studied touch Mac hardware for years. That background helps explain why the idea keeps returning in the rumor cycle.
OLED display and touch
The new MacBook Pro is said to move from a traditional LCD-style panel to an OLED panel. OLED can show deeper blacks and higher contrast. Reports also say Apple will include on a touchscreen layer so the screen will accept finger input. Analysts say a reinforced hinge and stronger screen supports are part of the design. Those are the changes intended to prevent the screen from wobbling when touched.
Apple can use a hole punch instead of the notch of the FaceTime camera. More space would be available at the top of the display with the hole punch. Some reports add that Apple is exploring a Dynamic Island-style interface on Mac, but that work is not confirmed. The company may also be testing new camera and sensor layouts for future Mac models.
Touch will not change the basic Mac input model. Apple is likely to keep the keyboard and the trackpad as primary controls. Touch may be an extra option for certain tasks that benefit from direct interaction. That approach would match Apple past messaging about keeping Mac and iPad roles distinct.
Timing and price
The release window is perceived by the industry analysts and individuals knowledgeable of the affair as late 2026 or early 2027. Supply and production complexity for OLED panels can affect timing and lead to later ship dates. Some reports suggest a price increase of a few hundred dollars for models with the new screen and the added engineering.
According to Bloomberg, Analyst Ming Chi Kuo has also predicted an OLED touchscreen MacBook in late 2026. He said the device will use cell touch technology and enter mass production around that time. Other sources echo that timeline but note that Apple could shift plans based on testing and component supply.
