Soon You Might Drift Between Worlds as Starfield Tests a New Cruise Mode

A new datamine has reignited hope for Starfield. Players found code strings that point to a cruise mode and to space encounters. The discovery suggests Bethesda may be testing a way to travel between planets in a more meaningful way. The find has made fans hopeful that the game could receive a major update that changes how space feels to play.

Why many players felt let down

Starfield launched with strong interest, but it fell short for many players. The game got praise in some areas. Combat received positive notes. Still, most players said the world felt empty. The first major expansion also did not win back many fans, and reviews were weak on some platforms. This left the community asking for bigger changes to exploration and content.

What the datamine revealed

Dataminers found references such as cruise mode and space cruise events in recent patch files. The entries mention OnShipCruiseArrival and SpaceCruiseEvent. These lines do not prove a final feature, but they do show the studio is working on the ship travel code. Players hope the code will lead to travel that feels less like a loading screen and more like a real voyage.

The way ships move now forces a lot of loading. Players often move from ship to planet through screens that break the sense of flow. Real-time travel that keeps players in space longer could reduce those transitions. It could also add more events, encounters, and reasons to use ships beyond quick travel. Fans imagine random encounters, new missions, and more visible things in space. Such changes would make exploration feel more rewarding.

How a cruise mode might work

The code hints at a cruise state that triggers when a player moves between systems. That state could let the ship fly at speed while the game spawns events. When the player reaches a target, there could be a loading screen to enter the world. This design would avoid the jarring change from ship to surface while still keeping some technical limits. It is not seamless travel yet, but it could feel much richer.

What players want besides travel

Fans do not only ask for better ship controls. They want more points of interest on planets. They want deeper side content and more varied moments in the open world. Many also want fewer repeated empty zones. The game needs stronger incentives to explore. Players say a cruise mode alone will not fix everything. It needs to be part of a broader rework that adds meaningful content.

Where Bethesda stands now

Bethesda released a small beta patch that fixed stability and menu issues. The studio also promised that more exciting work is coming. That message was short, and it left many players skeptical. The company has not confirmed full plans for interplanetary travel or a large code overhaul. The datamine offers a hint but no official schedule.

Modders and the community

Modders have tried to fill gaps by adding more immersive ship systems. Some community mods show what real flight could feel like. Those projects prove the engine can be pushed in new ways. Still, official updates will reach more players and may come with system-level fixes that modders cannot do alone. If Bethesda chooses to build a cruise mode, it could lift the whole player experience.

Bethesda is supposed to provide updates in the next few months. Monitor patch notes and beta branches to find out. Check dataminer threads and developer posts to learn whether the cruise code is going out of the testing stage into reality. When the studio combines travel adjustments with content updates, then Starfield would gain back some players. A new travel mode will not suffice when the studio fails to make a significant contribution. Real fans had to wait far too long to be revived. There is a reason to hope with the datamine. The future official fixes will determine whether that hope does become meaningful to the game.
