Google Has Just Two Weeks to Begin Cracking Open Android, It Admits in Emergency Filing

Google has just filed a new legal document that revealed a tight schedule. The company will have 14 days to relax its control of the Android system since the ruling of the antitrust case by Epic Games last week. Google is to enable third-party payment handlers and provide links to external download locations, without which the developers of apps could not previously use without violating the guidelines of the Play Store, unless the court extends a reprieve at a higher level.

Background of Epic’s Antitrust Victory

Epic Games scored the second victory in the court by getting its case against Google as a judge in a U.S. district court declared that certain aspects of Google Play Store conditions were against the antitrust law. The court held that Google was suppressing competition and hurting consumers through its requirements compelling developers to utilize Google Play Billing and barring developers from advertising to consumers to use other commerce platforms. The decision also asked Google to cease such practices as early as possible.

14-Day Emergency Deadline

Specifically, the judge’s injunction demands that Google stop mandating its billing system, permit developers to notify users of other purchase options, and let them link to alternative app stores from within the Play Store. These measures must be in effect within fourteen days unless Google secures an emergency stay. The company argues that such rapid changes could expose users and developers to security risks and destabilize the Android platform.

Google’s Security Concerns

Google’s filing described the fourteen-day window as an “emergency.” It warned that forcing rival app stores onto Android devices without proper safety measures could invite malware and fraud. Google also expressed concerns that removing its billing framework could weaken payment security and disrupt trusted features developers rely on.

Longer Timeline for Other Provisions

However, not all aspects of the larger injunction take effect under the fourteen-day rule. Epic’s broader wins (such as carrying rival app stores within the Play Store and sharing Google’s entire app catalogue) remain subject to a longer eight-month timeline. Judge James Donato allowed Google up to eight months to design and implement secure processes before those provisions begin.

Appeal and Emergency Stay

Google was quick to move to file an appeal against the decision and requested the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to stay the decision on an emergency basis. Later, the company managed to purchase some extra weeks, postponing the instant changes to be made. The reprieve is, however, temporary. Google will obey or face the sanctions after the period of stay. In case the appeals court cannot grant additional delay, a fresh fourteen-day countdown will start.

Implications for the Android Ecosystem

Google is taking on Epic in the same manner that it did Apple. Epic has lost its case against Apple over App Store policies, but the Android lot provides an unmissable sign that regulators and courts are becoming intolerant of the dominance of app stores by tech giants. The end result may redefine the way applications reach users on the 2 billion-plus active Android devices around the globe for the developers and the device makers.

The coming weeks will test Google’s ability to adapt its Play Store policies on short notice. If the emergency stay falls away and the 14-day clock resumes, Android developers will gain freedoms once thought impossible. Allowing alternative billing and third-party app downloads may usher in a new era of choice on the world’s most popular mobile platform.
