Firefox will be the only browser still supporting macOS Big Sur soon

Apple has set an end date for browser updates on macOS Big Sur. Google has confirmed that Chrome 138 will be the last version to run on macOS 11 and that Chrome will no longer update on that system after August 5, 2025. Apple’s own Safari stopped support in July 2023 with version 16.6.1 and no longer receives security or feature patches on Big Sur. This leaves only two browsers that will still get updates on Big Sur: Firefox and Microsoft Edge.

Why Browser Updates Matter

Malicious websites and sophisticated exploits are an ongoing danger to web browsers. Using a browser that is not updated with security features puts the user at risk of theft of data or drive-by downloads. To enhance safety, Apple has insisted that all iOS and iPadOS browsers be based on its WebKit engine, and customers with older desktop systems have to resort to using supported programs to protect themselves, too.

Chrome Support Ending on Big Sur

Google’s support note makes clear that Chrome 139 and later will require macOS 12 Monterey or above. On Big Sur, Chrome will continue to run but will display a warning and will not update further. Users who remain on Big Sur after August 5 will miss out on security fixes and feature improvements.

Safari’s Early Departure

With the release of Safari 17, Apple raised the minimum requirement to macOS Ventura. Version 16.6.1 of Safari was the last to support Big Sur and Monterey. Users on Big Sur have been without Safari updates since mid‑2023, losing built‑in translation, privacy reports, and other new features.

Browsers That Still Support Big Sur

The Firefox 140.0.4 of Mozilla can be used with macOS 10.15 Catalina and above, such as Big Sur. There was an upgrade on July 8, 2025, which caused additional performance and security improvements, but it was also compatible with the older systems. The Big Sur will also support Microsoft Edge, which has versions 129 to 138, yet version 139 will require macOS 12 or above.

How to Stay Secure

MacOS Big Sur users are advised to select a browser that will still be updated. Firefox has long-term support and security updates. Edge will once again be an option until its next big version. To receive the maximum protection and achieve new features, it is the safest way to upgrade the operating system to Monterey or newer. The only reliable way to prevent the new threats is to update of software, and the advantage is the ability to use the latest web technologies. Assess your browsing choices now to secure and optimize your Mac.
