Apple is secretly working on a foldable iPad that could change how we use tablets. Leaked information indicates the foldable iPad will offer Face ID functionality through the display and a 20-inch screen dimension when in its unfolded state. The upcoming Apple device merges iPad and Mac attributes while extending tablet dimensions to produce a device that functions as a large notebook that folds into book form.

Under-Screen Face ID: No More Notches

The Face ID sensors of current iPads exist within the bezel framing the screen area. Per the latest foldable iPad prototype development the sensors that operate Face ID technology have been embedded beneath the display panel. You will get more screen visibility thanks to the elimination of screen borders and the notch. Just like fingerprint scanners function invisibly to identify users by their prints this technology enables face-based recognition through an invisible system.

Leaker “Digital Chat Station” shared this detail, but experts warn the tech is still years away. Apple has tried under-screen sensors for iPhones since 2017, but it is tricky to make them work perfectly. If successful, this iPad could pave the way for notch-free iPhones too.

A Giant Foldable Screen for Work and Play

The iPad expands into a display that measures 20 inches which compares to the size of a compact television. Multiple sources indicate Apple has designs to release this product soon. The device folds into dimensions that match two iPad Pro devices laid adjacent to each other. The design addresses the major challenge of handling large tablet devices. Users can fold the device for transportation yet unfold it to watch films and draw or perform their work tasks.

The foldable iPad might act like a MacBook replacement. Open it halfway, and the bottom screen could turn into a keyboard or trackpad. Apple’s patents show ideas like touch-sensitive keys that change based on the app. Need to type in French? The keyboard adjusts instantly.

iPadOS, Not macOS: A Smarter Hybrid

Do not expect macOS on this iPad. Apple insists it won’t merge iPad and Mac software. Instead, the foldable iPad will run a “hybrid” version of iPadOS with Mac-like features. Picture split-screen apps, better file management, and desktop-level tools, all optimized for touch and Apple Pencil.

Release Date: 2028 or Later?

The expected 2028 launch date for the upcoming device remains uncertain because Apple frequently changes its product timeframes. According to AppleInsider, several reports from last year indicated Apple would release an 8-inch foldable iPad during 2026 along with its iPad mini design. The company aims to release the 20-inch model as a professional product in the future for users who require portable workstations.

Why This Matters

The foldable Apple iPad encompasses more than just flexible display capabilities. The device requires us to think outside established work and creation standards. Such an advanced gadget could become the best tool for artists along with writers as well as people who hate managing several devices through its combination of under-screen technology with laptop display dimensions and smart operating software. But patience is key. The fragility of foldable screens forces Apple to release an absolute product that is not rushed to market. A successful design of the iPad may lead to its adoption as a full-fledged replacement for your laptop along with your notebook.
