Apple’s 2024 product lineup has delivered on several fronts, from groundbreaking iPad upgrades to the expansion of its AirPods lineup and a revamped Mac Mini. But if you’ve been eagerly waiting for a true update to the AirPods Max, Apple’s flagship over-ear headphones, you may have to keep waiting.

Instead of a major overhaul, the 2024 refresh brought only a few incremental changes: a USB-C port and new color options. While functional, these updates didn’t satisfy fans hoping for innovative features or a competitive edge against rivals like Sony and Bose.

Why the Delay?

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the next generation of AirPods Max isn’t on Apple’s immediate roadmap. The hesitation reportedly stems from lukewarm market performance. The headphones aren’t flying off shelves like the wildly popular AirPods Pro, but they’re also not failing enough to warrant discontinuation.

Apple’s reluctance to invest heavily in the AirPods Max may come down to numbers. Analysts like Ming-Chi Kuo estimate the headphones sold fewer than a million units during their debut year. In contrast, competitors like Sony’s WH-1000XM5 and Bose QuietComfort 45 offer high-quality sound and noise cancellation at significantly lower prices.

What’s Holding Them Back?

Despite rave reviews for their stellar audio quality and active noise cancellation, the AirPods Max face several challenges:

  • Price: At $549, they’re among the most expensive consumer headphones, pricing out many potential buyers.
  • Competition: Rivals like Sony and Bose deliver comparable (or better) performance with prices hovering around $350.
  • Feature Set: While Apple leans heavily on ecosystem perks like seamless device switching, its rivals often offer broader compatibility and advanced features.

What’s Next for AirPods Max?

For now, it seems Apple will leave the AirPods Max as-is for the foreseeable future. Gurman speculates a true refresh could take another year or two. When it does arrive, expectations are high for upgrades like:

  • Improved sound and noise cancellation.
  • Enhanced comfort and design tweaks.
  • Integration of next-gen Apple features like lossless audio via USB-C.
  • A more competitive price point or at least features that justify the current one.

A Waiting Game

While the AirPods Max remains a solid choice for audiophiles who value Apple’s ecosystem, their niche appeal and steep price make them less of a priority for the tech giant. For now, fans may have to settle for the current iteration, while Apple takes its time perfecting a true successor.

So, if you’re eyeing premium headphones and don’t want to wait, competitors like Sony and Bose might be worth a closer look. But for die-hard Apple enthusiasts, patience might eventually pay off just don’t expect a release anytime soon.
