The 5th generation iPad came to market in March 2017 and the 7th generation iPad in September 2019. The iPad 7th Gen has a slightly larger display, at 10.2 inches, versus the 9.7-inch display on the iPad 5th Gen, along with a newer processor, the Apple A10 Fusion chip, and includes support for the Apple Pencil (1st Gen).

Price Comparison

iPad 5th Generation is more budget-friendly, and the price for the iPad 5th Gen starts at $67, while the iPad 7th Generation begins at $119. The reason for the price difference here is that the 7th gen is more technologically advanced and has more features.

Specifications and Features

Apple A9 chip boasts of a 9.7-inch Retina display on the iPad 5th Gen. In contrast, the iPad 7th Gen has a 10.2-inch Retina display, the Apple A10 chip, and the Apple Smart Keyboard, the 1st Gen Apple Pencil support. The models keep the same up to 128GB storage, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2, stereo speakers, two microphones, a Lightning connector, and a home button with Touch ID.

The front-facing FaceTime HD camera with 1.2mp on both models, and Autofocus, 8mp wide-angle rear-facing camera, and Tap to focus (iPhone Model D1 only) on the iOS models, and Tap to focus (iPhone Model D2) only in the Android models.

Design and Dimensions

At 9.4 inches tall, 6.6 inches wide, and 0.29 inches thick with a 9.7-inch display, the iPad 5th Gen is 16 percent larger. The WiFi version weighs 1.03 pounds and the WiFi + Cellular version weighs 1.05 pounds. However, the iPad 7th gen measures 9.8 x 6.8 x 0.29 inches and the screen size is 10.2 inches13. The WiFi model weighs in at 1.07 lbs., and the WiFi + Cellular model at 1.09 lbs.

Display and Battery Life

Both have a Retina display, backlight LED multi-touch with IPS technology. Both iPad 5th Gen and iPad 7th Gen have 264 pixels per inch, but the iPad 5th Gen has 2048 X 1536, and the iPad 7th Gen, has 2160 X 1620. Both displays feature a 500-nit SDR brightness, and a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating. The first-generation Apple Pencil is also supported on the iPad 7th Gen. The models have a 32.4-watt hour rechargeable lithium polymer battery with up to 10 hours of battery life on Wi-Fi or 9 hours LiOn (tested), and complete assembly takes 2 hours.

Color and Storage Options

The iPad 5th Gen introduces two new colors not found in the iPad 7th Gen color palette: Gold and Gray. The iPad 5th Gen and 7th Gen are sold in Silver, Gold, and Space Gray. The Silver model has a white bezel around the display, the Gold model has a silver bezel and the Space Gray model has a black bezel. Both models offer two storage options: 32GB and 128GB.
