The developer of the Super Mario RPG remake, produced in partnership between Nintendo and Square Enix, was revealed after several copies of the game leaked online days before the official release. According to various users on social media, the Japanese studio ArtePiazza developed the new version of the Mario RPG.

ArtePiazza is known for its involvement with the Square Enix Dragon Quest franchise since the release of Dragon Quest 3 in 1996. Initially, the studio focused on design but later transitioned to producing complete remakes for PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS.

Details about the team that worked on the Super Mario RPG remake were also revealed by the user on X (or Twitter, if you prefer), Mondo_Mega. According to him, Ayako Moriwaki directed the Nintendo Switch version. In her resume, she served as assistant director in the recently released Pikmin 4, in addition to working on other titles such as Yoshi’s Crafted World (2019) and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (2013). Nintendo collaborators also contributed to the game, participating in art direction, graphics, and user interface.

Interestingly, Nintendo Pictures, an animation studio founded last year, also contributed to the development of the Super Mario RPG remake, assisting in character art and animations. Some members of the original Super Mario RPG development team also appear in the credits of the new version, including the designer Taro Kudo, director Yoshihiko Maekawa, and composer Yoko Shimomura.

Apparently, Square Enix’s involvement in the production of the title was limited to supervision. Chihiro Fujioka, who directed the Super Nintendo version, mentioned that he would not work on the remake but expressed excitement about its release. The Super Mario RPG remake is set to launch on November 17 for the Nintendo Switch.
