Instagram’s ‘Created with AI’ Feature Can Cause Problems for Users

Meta’s latest innovation, the ‘Created with AI’ label on Instagram and Facebook, has sparked controversy among many users. Unfortunately, this new feature isn’t functioning correctly, leading to thousands of images being incorrectly labeled due to Meta’s AI technology.

Both social platforms introduced this feature to provide transparency regarding images of uncertain origin or those containing AI-generated content. However, the outcome has been far from satisfactory. Several users have found their genuine photographs erroneously marked with the ‘Created with AI’ label by Instagram or Facebook.

The issue arises because Meta’s AI struggles to distinguish between authentic images and those created using artificial intelligence. This is evident in numerous posts labeled with ‘Created with AI,’ despite clearly featuring real photographs. Even when generative AI performs well, most users can still discern between reality and fiction in the majority of cases.

What’s Going on with Instagram’s ‘Created with AI’ Feature?

It appears that Meta’s AI confusion is causing significant issues. Users now have the option to manually add the ‘Created with AI’ label when uploading an image or video. However, the social network itself can also automatically apply this label if it suspects the content was generated using artificial intelligence.

The problem lies in the AI’s inability to perform this task accurately. According to some reports, the issue stems from minor photo edits like color filters or saturation adjustments. It seems the AI struggles to distinguish between entirely artificial creations and real images with minor enhancements.

A notable case is influencer Jaume Lahoz’s recent post. The carousel included several genuine photographs and a video with some visible color enhancements to improve the image. Despite this, the publication was labeled ‘Created with AI’ (only visible in the app), even though it contained authentic content.

As a result, instead of clarifying the origin of AI-generated images, this tool is causing more confusion and creating problems for many users. Currently, there doesn’t appear to be a straightforward solution or an option to remove the label if Instagram or Facebook applies it automatically.

Upon examining other incorrectly labeled posts, many show signs of retouching with highly saturated colors—characteristics typically used by AI to enhance its creations. To avoid the ‘Created with AI’ label, we recommend retouching images directly within the Instagram app. Alternatively, consider refraining from any edits altogether.
