Google has announced the launch of the new Credential Manager API for Android app developers. This tool aims to encourage more apps to offer passwordless login support through device access keys in the Android operating system.
According to the company, Credential Manager will be available starting from November 1st and will bring the future of authentication to Android, simplifying the way users log into their apps and websites while also making them more secure.
It’s worth noting that Credential Manager had a preview version released for developers months ago. Now, with the official launch announcement, the tool is expected to enable apps to provide better authentication support in Android 14.
As a result, the login experience is expected to become increasingly frictionless, as users of this type of method would not need to worry about keeping login information in their heads or constantly resetting passwords.
Third-party password managers like 1Password can also integrate the API for an even more streamlined experience when using this alternative as the default option, instead of Google’s own option. The company is quite enthusiastic about the new API.
According to Google, several apps already have integration with Credential Manager and support access keys, including Uber and WhatsApp. Remember that Android 14 was released at the beginning of the month and should reach various smartphones in the coming months.
