Meta Launches New Tool to Protect Creators from Content Theft

Meta has launched a mobile tool called Facebook content protection to help Reels creators detect when someone reuses their work without permission. The tool alerts creators and then gives them options to block a reuse, track how that reuse performs, or add attribution links back to the original.

How the system finds copies is the same matching technology that powers Rights Manager. Rights Manager scans video, audio, and image uploads and looks for similarity against reference files that a rights holder registers. Meta repurposed that matching for this new mobile feature so individual creators can see matches without being a large publisher.

How It Works

Creators must post their Reels to Facebook to be eligible. Cross-posted Reels from Instagram count when the creator uses the share to Facebook option. The mobile tool monitors Facebook and Instagram for matches to the creator’s original file. When the tool finds a match, it shows the similarity percentage and basic details such as views and whether the repost is monetized. Creators then pick what to do next.

The tool gives three main responses. A creator can block the matched Reel so its distribution is limited on both Facebook and Instagram. A creator can track performance to see how many views the matched Reel gets and where it reaches people. A creator can add attribution links, which place a visible original label and link back to the creator profile page or, in some cases, to the original Reel. Creators can also release a claim if they prefer to let a matched Reel stay visible.

What Creators Gain

Meta is rolling the tool out automatically to creators who are in Facebook content monetization and who meet enhanced integrity and originality rules. Rights Manager users will also get access. Creators can check their Professional Dashboard and Feed for eligibility notices and apply for access if needed. The tool is mobile-first for now while Meta tests a desktop version in the professional dashboard.

The feature can reduce the time a creator spends hunting for stolen uploads. It can also give creators options that are more flexible than a straight takedown. For example, a creator who wants credit but not to stop distribution can choose attribution tracking rather than blocking. Meta says tracking is the default setting.

What the feature does not do is automatically punish accounts that repost content. Blocking a matched Reel limits its reach but does not, by itself, force a penalty on the account that shared it. Creators who believe a match is a false claim or who need enforcement can still file formal copyright reports through the IP reporting channel. Meta warns that misuse of the tool can trigger restrictions on the reporter.

Why This Matters Now

More creators rely on short-form video for income and for audience building. Repost and remix behavior can grow audiences, but can also remove credit and earnings from the original maker. A simple mobile tool that detects copies and offers clear choices can help creators protect their work without complex manual searches. Rights Manager has long served publishers and major rights holders. This new tool narrows the gap so individual creators get easier access to a matching workflow.

Meta will continue testing and may bring the feature to desktop creators tools if tests go well. Creators who want the feature now should check their Professional Dashboard for eligibility and follow the content protection overview inside the Creators Hub.
