Meta to Target Ads With AI Chat Data on Facebook, Instagram

Meta will start using information from user conversations with its AI tools to help sell ads. The company will update its privacy policy by December 16 to reflect the change. The new rule will apply around the world except in the European Union, the United Kingdom, and South Korea. Meta says it will notify users in the coming days. Sources report there will be no way to opt out.

This change expands the kinds of signals Meta can use for ad targeting. The company already uses browsing activity, social interactions, and profile data. Now it will also use what people type and share in chats with Meta AI. That includes voice images and video that are analyzed by AI on devices such as Ray Ban Meta glasses. Meta says it will not use sensitive topics to target ads. Those topics include religion, political views, health, sexual orientation, racial and ethnic origin, and trade union membership. The company also says it will build systems to avoid using clearly sensitive content for ads.

Meta reports that more than one billion people use Meta AI each month. The company says that many of those interactions are long and detailed. That means the new data stream could be rich. If a user talks to Meta AI about hiking or travel, that information could help advertisers show relevant products. Meta will apply this matching only when users are logged into the same account across products. That means chats on one product could influence ads seen on Facebook and Instagram when the same account is used.

What is changing

Meta will change how it treats AI conversation data for advertising. The change applies to most global users. The rule does not apply in regions with stricter privacy laws. The company plans to add this update to its privacy policy by mid-December. Users will get a formal notice. Meta says it will not use clearly sensitive categories to target ads. Meta also said it currently has no immediate plan to place ads inside its AI chat products. The company left open the possibility of that happening later.

The update covers multiple AI products and features. That includes chatbot-generated content, the Vibes feed, and camera analysis from smart glasses. Meta will use those signals to refine ad targeting and to help advertisers reach audiences with greater precision. The company says it will charge advertisers in the same ways it does now. Tech reporting says Meta will also build systems so that AI interactions can be used to refine ad models over time.

How to respond

If you use Meta AI, you may want to review your account settings. You can limit what you share in chats. You can avoid discussing topics you do not want tied to ads. You can sign out when you test AI features or use a different account for private conversations. You can also delete chat history when that option is available. A cautious step is to limit permissions for devices that record audio or video. If you use Meta smart glasses, consider turning off features that upload media automatically. These steps will not be perfect, but they can reduce the signals Meta can use for ad targeting.

Privacy experts will watch the change closely. Some will point to the lack of an opt-out and the broad reach of the policy as major concerns. Regulators in some regions may review the update. For users in the European Union, the United Kingdom, and South Korea, the change will not apply because of local privacy rules. That will leave those users under a different set of protections.

What this means in plain terms is simple. Free AI features often come with tradeoffs. In this case, the tradeoff is using chat data to improve ad targeting. Meta frames the move as a way to improve relevance for users and value for advertisers. Users who prefer to keep conversations private will need to change how they interact with Meta AI or reduce the use of connected devices that feed AI features.
