Spotify Ends Long Wait for Lossless Audio for Subscribers

Spotify has finally turned on lossless audio for Premium subscribers. The company will deliver 24 bit 44.1 kHz FLAC playback to eligible users in a phased rollout across fifty markets. This move ends a long period of waiting and changes the streaming options for millions of listeners. It also reshapes competition between major music services and raises practical questions about devices, bandwidth, and sound quality.

What Spotify changed

Spotify announced that lossless streaming will be included for all Premium subscribers rather than locked behind a separate expensive tier. The service launches with a 24 bit 44.1 kHz FLAC option. That format is a meaningful upgrade over standard compressed streams. Premium listeners will be able to enable lossless in the app settings. The company will also show an on screen indicator when a track is playing in lossless. Spotify will support a list of compatible hardware at launch. Initial partners include several major audio makers and receiver brands. More devices will be added in the months after the rollout.

Spotify chose 24 bit 44.1 kHz as its first lossless option. That format preserves the full CD era sampling rate while extending dynamic range with 24 bit depth. For many listeners and many recordings, the difference between standard compressed audio and 24 bit FLAC is clearly audible on reasonably good headphones or on a full sound system. At the same time, the chosen ceiling leaves room for future expansion into higher sample rates and studio class hi res files.

The company is not introducing a new price tier to deliver the feature. Spotify will not split the Premium base for access to lossless. That decision sets Spotify apart from some earlier speculation suggesting a separate hi fidelity subscription. With lossless included in Premium, Spotify aims to make higher quality sound accessible to a wider audience rather than gated behind an extra payment.

How it compares

Spotify delivers a serious upgrade that many listeners will appreciate. At the same time, the firm stops short of the top end that some competitors offer. Apple Music, Tidal, and Qobuz support higher resolution files up to 24 bit 192 kHz for selected content. That full hi res range remains the domain of services that cater to demanding listeners and niche catalogs. For most users, 24 bit 44.1 kHz offers a clear, practical compromise between perceived quality and streaming practicality.

The real world value of lossless depends on several factors. First, the recording and mastering matter more than the bit depth on paper. A poorly mixed track will not become great simply because it is encoded in FLAC. Second, the listener device is crucial. Smartphones with standard earbuds will show a smaller improvement than dedicated digital to analogue converters and over ear headphones designed for higher fidelity. Third, bandwidth and storage need consideration. Lossless streams use more data and bandwidth than compressed streams. Many listeners in countries with metered mobile plans or limited home bandwidth should be aware of the trade off.

Spotify’s move will also pressure other platforms. The launch narrows an advantage that some rivals have used to attract audiophiles. It also removes one offensive talking point for Apple and the specialist services. At the same time, Spotify’s conservative upper limit may leave audio purists wanting more.

Listening in everyday life will also illustrate how much difference lossless makes. Casual listening on a commute will often show smaller improvements than focused listening at home. For creators and producers, lossless will aid quality control and reference listening. For listeners who care deeply about sound, the option will be welcome even if it is not the final word in hi res audio.

Apple Music, Tidal, and Qobuz still lead in maximum supported sample rates. Spotify now competes on accessibility and catalog reach rather than absolute top end fidelity. That is a sensible strategy for a platform whose focus is mainstream music discovery and broad usage.

The rollout will appear in a sequence of markets. Spotify will notify subscribers when the feature becomes available in their region. Users will be able to switch lossless on or off from the media quality settings. The company will expand compatible hardware over time so more listeners can make use of higher quality playback.
