A federal judge has issued a major ruling in the long running antitrust case against Google. The judge said Google violated the law in how it maintained search dominance. The judge also set a set of remedies that will change how Google distributes search.

Judge Amit Mehta ruled that Google does not have to sell Chrome or Android. The judge also said Google may keep paying to be the default search engine on iPhones. The court did block exclusive contracts that prevent rivals from getting the same placement.

Google must begin sharing certain search data with approved rivals. The court ordered data sharing to let competing search engines build better services. The judge said this step will help rival search products scale and compete. Google said it will review the order and plans to appeal.

Judge Mehta Ruling

The judge found that Google used exclusionary agreements to protect its search position. The court said those contracts must end. The judge also rejected the most extreme remedies sought by prosecutors. The court declined to force a sale of Chrome or Android. Legal experts said the decision reflects caution about breaking up major tech platforms.

What it means

For Apple the ruling leaves the current search payments intact for now. Apple will still earn large annual payments for search placement. Regulators can still require new terms that limit exclusivity. For users the ruling could bring more choice over time if rivals gain meaningful data and if Apple offers more default options.

According to CNBC, Google will appeal. That means the legal fight may continue for years. The company will also need to build mechanisms to share data while protecting user privacy and its own intellectual property. Rival search firms will test whether the shared data is useful in practice. Industry groups and lawmakers will watch how the remedies are enforced.

This ruling changes the rules of the road for search distribution. It lowers the legal risk of breaking up a major platform while raising the bar for fair access. Expect negotiations procedural fights and technical work in the months ahead as the parties adapt.
