Meta has purchased Play AI, a California startup known for its human‑like voice cloning tool, to strengthen its generative voice offerings. The acquisition brings all of Play AI’s engineers and researchers into Meta’s fold next week. They will report to Johan Schalkwyk, who joined Meta after leading speech AI at Google.

Play AI built a platform that lets users clone voices or create entirely new human‑sounding speech for use in apps websites and phone systems. The system generates low‑latency speech with natural intonation and pacing by training on large voice data sets. Media and entertainment companies have used the tool for automated narration and character dialogue in games and virtual experiences.
Integration with Meta’s AI Initiatives
According to an internal memo Meta views Play AI’s technology as an ideal complement to its existing AI efforts. The voice cloning platform will enhance Meta AI, power more realistic AI Characters in Horizon Worlds, and improve audio features in future wearables such as smart glasses. Meta also plans to use the new team’s expertise to develop voice‑first interactions across its social apps.
Backdrop of Aggressive AI Hiring
This acquisition follows Meta’s recent hires of top AI talent from OpenAI Google DeepMind and Apple. Earlier this year the company secured a fourteen point three-billion-dollar investment in Scale AI and brought on its CEO to lead the Superintelligence Lab. By adding Play AI, Meta deepens its voice‑AI bench as it competes with rivals in building smarter conversational agents.
Meta will not own Play AI but will license its technology exclusively within the company. Financial terms were not disclosed. With the entire Play AI team now part of Meta’s AI organization, the company signals a firm commitment to voice as a core element of future human‑computer interaction.
