Meta has announced a new feature of doing a summary of your unread WhatsApp messages privately using Meta AI. This tool provides a brief view of the recent chat activity in order to read the general idea without scanning each text line by line. The summary appears only for you and does not expose your messages to Meta, WhatsApp, or other chat members.

Private Processing Protects Your Privacy
The new summaries rely on Private Processing technology. All message content remains encrypted on your device. Your texts never leave WhatsApp’s secure environment. Meta AI works on encrypted data on your phone, and only the summary result is shown. No private text or summary is stored on Meta’s servers.
How to Enable and Use Message Summaries
You can turn on AI summaries under Settings, then Chats, then Private Processing. Once enabled, you will see an icon next to chats with unread messages. Tap that icon, and your phone will generate a short overview of recent messages. This process happens locally and does not slow down chat loads.
Initial Rollout in the United States
Meta is launching the feature first in the United States with support for English language chats. The company plans to expand availability to more countries and languages later this year. If your WhatsApp does not yet show the summary icon, wait for an update in the coming weeks.

Beyond Summaries Private Writing Suggestions
Message Summaries is one of several AI tools coming to WhatsApp through Private Processing. You may also see writing suggestions that help you craft clearer replies. These features live under the same Private Processing menu, where you can toggle each tool on or off. Meta’s private AI features aim to help you manage high volumes of chat content without sacrificing the end-to-end encryption you expect from WhatsApp. Enjoy faster catch-ups and smarter responses while your data stays on your device.
