Meta has reversed its long-held promise of no ads on WhatsApp. The company will soon run paid promotions in the Status section of the messaging app. This change will arrive worldwide over the next few months and will help Meta earn more from a service with over three billion users.
Why ads are coming to WhatsApp
WhatsApp began as an ad-free app under the slogan no ads, no games, no gimmicks. Its founders wanted a clean space for private chats. Meta’s leaders now see a chance to grow income by placing ads where they do not intrude on private messages. Businesses asked for a way to share updates with customers. Ads in Status meet that need while keeping chats ad-free.
Where users will see the ads
Advertisements will appear only in the Updates tab. This tab sits beside the main chat list in the app. Users who do not tap Updates will not see any ads. Meta hopes this keeps family and friend conversations clean. Ads will look like other status posts and will vanish after one day. Each ad will link back to the business that paid for it.
New paid channels and subscriptions
WhatsApp will also let creators charge for special message channels. A channel is a one-way feed of text or pictures from a business or creator. Users may pay a small monthly fee to join a channel that offers tips, recipes, or expert guides. Businesses can pay Meta to promote these channels so more people find them.
How WhatsApp will target ads
Meta says all messages, calls, and status updates will stay end-to-end encrypted. No one but the sender and receiver can read them. Ads will use the location device language and which channels a user follows. This basic data will help Meta decide which businesses to show in each user’s Status section. Meta will not read private chats to target ads.
Balance of privacy and revenue
Adding ads to WhatsApp marks a big shift for Meta. The company already shows ads on Facebook, Instagram, and its other apps. Now, WhatsApp will also help it reach more customers. Meta faces a challenge to keep trust while growing its income. It must show that ads do not spoil the private chat experience.
Meta’s move follows a strong earnings report in April. The company beat Wall Street estimates even as signs of global economic worry spread. Ads in WhatsApp may cushion Meta against future slowdowns. At the same time, WhatsApp users will find they can discover new services and paid channels without leaving their messaging app.
