Apple has announced a major shift for app developers. IOS 19 will allow users to use Apple’s AI in the programs they develop. In other words, your most-used apps could now use writing help, visual image creation, and better notifications.
Apple’s AI system, called Apple Intelligence, has been slow to roll out new features. By letting developers use it, Apple hopes more people will see how useful its AI can be. The company will announce this update at its WWDC event on June 9.
What Developers Can Do with Apple’s AI
Developers will get access to AI tools that work directly on your iPhone. These tools do not need the internet, which keeps your data private. For example:
- A notes app could use AI to summarize long paragraphs.
- A social media app could create custom emojis based on your photos.
- A fitness app could send reminders to drink water after a workout.
At first, developers can only use AI features that run on the phone itself. More advanced tools that use the internet (like real-time language translation) will come later.
Why Apple Is Sharing Its AI
Apple has done this before. When the App Store first launched, it only featured Apple-made apps. Later, they let outside developers join, which led to the millions of apps we use today. Letting developers use Apple Intelligence could create new types of apps no one has thought of yet.

Challenges for Apple
Apple’s own AI tools for developers, like Swift Assist, have had problems. Some engineers say the AI makes mistakes or works too slowly. To fix this, Apple is working with other companies like Anthropic (maker of the Claude AI) to build better tools.
Other companies, like GitHub and OpenAI, already have popular AI tools for developers. Apple needs to catch up by offering something unique. Their focus on privacy (keeping data on your phone) could be a big selling point.

If developers use Apple’s AI, you might notice:

The Future of Apple’s AI
