Why Instagram is Betting Big on Smarter Search to Win the Social Media Race

Instagram dedicates intensive efforts to developing its search engine because numerous young users favor TikTok above Google for acquiring information. Adam Mosseri dedicated himself to lead Instagram as he expressed the need for improved search tools on the platform. The platform intends to deliver simple user access to videos and photos and trends similar to TikTok functionality.

Why Search Matters for Gen Z

Gen Z users, along with other young individuals, typically access TikTok or Instagram first when they aim to acquire new knowledge. Young individuals within the Gen Z age category prefer TikTok and Instagram over Google to find solutions for their needs, including recipes, travel suggestions, and fashion ideas. Studies show that over half of Gen Z people prefer TikTok when searching, while others pick Instagram. This change has made Instagram realize it needs to step up its game.

Mosseri admitted that Instagram’s search feature is not great right now. If you try to find specific videos or topics, it can be frustrating. The company is now using smarter technology and bigger teams to fix this.

How Instagram’s New Search Will Work

Using AI and Comments to Improve Results

Instagram is adding two big changes to its search. AI technology will serve as the first to recognize customer demands. User queries for “easy pancake recipe” will trigger Instagram to present videos containing the best cooking methods instead of limited hashtag posts.

Second, Instagram will look at comments to find popular topics. If many people ask questions about a video, like “Where is that café in Paris?” Instagram might suggest searches like “Paris café locations” at the top of the comments. This helps users find answers faster.

What This Means for TikTok and Google

TikTok became popular because its search feature works well. People love how quickly they can find funny videos or life hacks. Instagram’s upgrades are a direct challenge to TikTok. At the same time, Google is losing some users because young people prefer social media for searches.

Instagram plans to keep users on its app longer. If you can find everything from workout ideas to travel guides without leaving Instagram, you might not need TikTok or Google.

Good News for Creators and Regular Users

Creators (people who post videos and photos) will benefit the most. Right now, their posts get the most views in the first day or two. Better search functionality allows older posts to continue attracting viewer attention. A makeup tutorial published last month will appear in search results for “Halloween makeup ideas” queries.

The newly designed search engine will assist regular users in discovering fresh content on the platform. Online search results would display the best hiking trail videos created by experienced outdoor explorers. Instagram also wants to organize results by topic so that you can explore categories like “fitness” or “budget travel” without scrolling forever.

When Will These Changes Happen?

Mosseri said some features, like comment-based searches, are coming “soon.” The AI upgrades will roll out over the next year. Instagram is also testing a cleaner design to make searching less cluttered.

The Bigger Picture

Instagram is now more than just a place to share photos with friends. Mosseri shared that most users don’t post daily anymore. Instead, they watch Stories, send messages, and explore content. Instagram intends to achieve top app status by improving its search capabilities so users can find all their trending content and educational material.

Short video platform TikTok faces competition from Instagram because of its latest feature set, although TikTok retains its position as a top video app. More discovery opportunities are now available to Gen Z users through Instagram without needing different applications.
