OpenAI has formed a partnership with its competitor, Anthropic, to implement the Model Context Protocol (MCP) tool. MCP serves as a tool that enables ChatGPT and other AI systems to access digital documents to provide enhanced responses. The tool provides ChatGPT with access to your Google Drive, Slack, and calendar using a key.
According to OpenAI’s boss, Sam Altman MCP will start working with the ChatGPT desktop application through future updates. This functionality allows ChatGPT to monitor your files and work tools during your chat sessions.

What Is MCP?
MCP is a tool that lets AI models safely talk to your apps and data. Here is how it works:
- MCP Servers: These are like storage rooms holding your data (like documents or calendars).
- MCP Clients: These are AI apps (like ChatGPT) that ask the server for information.
- Safe Chat: They share data without letting anyone else see it.
For example, if you ask ChatGPT, “What meetings do I have today?” MCP lets it peek into your calendar app and tell you.
Why This Is a Big Deal
- ChatGPT Gets Better Answers
Before MCP, ChatGPT could not easily check your files or apps. Now, it can grab real info while chatting, making its answers more helpful.
- Friendship Between Rivals
OpenAI and Anthropic are competitors, but they agree on using MCP. This means their AI tools (like ChatGPT and Claude) can use the same connections. Developers do not need to build separate tools for each AI.
- Big Companies Are Joining
Companies like Block (which makes Cash App) and Replit (a coding website) already use MCP. With OpenAI joining, more apps might add MCP, too.
Problems to Fix
MCP is not perfect yet. Some people say it is tricky to set up for huge companies. Also, OpenAI and Anthropic need to work together nicely even though they compete.
Anthropic’s leader, Mike Krieger, said he is happy that OpenAI is using MCP. He called it a “thriving tool” that many people use. However, experts say that MCP needs more companies to join in order to stay useful.
How This Helps You
Soon, ChatGPT could do cool new things:
- At School: Check your homework files to help you study.
- At Work: Pull data from spreadsheets to answer questions.
- At Home: Look at your fitness app to plan workouts.

The development process becomes faster for developers working on application creation through MCP. Every AI benefits directly from the MCP infrastructure because developers establish general activation protocols instead of individual ones. Staff members can dedicate their time to making applications more intelligent through MCP.
OpenAI plans to deliver new MCP information in the near future. Rival companies demonstrate their ability to team up and improve AI benefits available to the entire population.
