Microsoft is making the most of its multi-billion-dollar investment in OpenAI. To ensure users have access to the most advanced AI, the company has made a bold decision—offering OpenAI’s O1 model for free, as long as it is used within Copilot.

Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, announced that the O1 reasoning model will now be integrated into Copilot. He also revealed that all users can now access Think Deeper, a feature that enables deeper conversations and topic exploration using OpenAI’s AI. Previously, this feature—introduced in October 2024—was only available to Copilot Pro users.

“Today, we’ve made Think Deeper free and available to all Copilot users,” Suleyman said in a LinkedIn post. “This now gives everyone access to OpenAI’s world-class O1 reasoning model in Copilot, everywhere, at no cost.”

According to Suleyman, Think Deeper can explore any topic and help plan projects or offer solutions to all types of questions. The head of Microsoft AI emphasized that this feature is not meant to replace human teaching but rather serves as “an extraordinary complement.”

The O1 offering within Think Deeper is similar to what we saw with ChatGPT. Remember, Bing was the first to offer free, unlimited access to ChatGPT when it launched. Microsoft’s move appeared to undercut Sam Altman and his company’s monetization strategy, but the agreement with Redmond forced them to follow the rules.

How to Use O1 for Free on Copilot

Think Deeper is essentially O1, the reasoning model that OpenAI introduced in September 2024. This AI, powered by Strawberry technology, can tackle complex tasks in science, mathematics, and programming. According to OpenAI, O1 operates similarly to a PhD student in science and can score 83% on a qualifying exam for the International Mathematical Olympiad.

To use O1 for free on Copilot, simply access Think Deeper within the Copilot platform, and start exploring its capabilities for solving complex problems.

Until a few hours ago, access to O1 was limited to ChatGPT Plus users. While OpenAI offered free test questions to users, once you reached a certain number of queries, you had to pay. However, this will no longer be the case if you use it through Copilot, as Microsoft is making it available to all users for free.

To try Think Deeper, simply press the button inside the prompt field before asking your question. Keep in mind that this Copilot feature requires you to sign in with a Microsoft account.

With Think Deeper, Microsoft aims to challenge DeepSeek, the Chinese AI that recently made ChatGPT and Gemini look outdated. DeepSeek features a reasoning model accessible via a button on its interface, allowing users to ask complex questions about mathematics. The AI then works through the problem entirely before providing an answer.
