WhatsApp has introduced a feature that users have been eagerly requesting. The popular messaging app from Meta announced an update that adds a functionality already available in other messaging apps like Telegram. This new feature lets you know when one of your contacts is typing during a chat.

The company explained that the latest WhatsApp update for iOS and Android now includes typing indicators. This visual feature displays in real-time who is typing on the chat screen. When chatting with friends or family, you will see a three-dot animation indicating that someone is typing.
WhatsApp’s typing indicators now work not only in individual chats but also in group chats. The update applies to group chat windows, where you’ll see the three-dot indicator next to the typing profile photo. If more than one person is typing, their profile photos will appear in small circles.
With this update, WhatsApp is joining other apps that already offer real-time typing indicators. It’s surprising that, as one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, it took so long to implement this feature. Typing indicators have been available for years on Telegram and Messenger, though it’s worth noting that WhatsApp has often been slow to introduce new features, such as dark mode.
How to Know If Someone Is Typing on WhatsApp
To find out if someone is typing a message on WhatsApp, simply check the bottom left corner of the chat window.
- In a one-on-one conversation, the WhatsApp typing indicator will appear as a three-dot animation. This means the other person is composing a message and could send it at any moment.
- In a group chat, the typing indicator will be accompanied by a small circle showing the profile photo of the person typing. This addition helps you identify who is typing in real-time.
If you’re an active WhatsApp user, you may have already noticed the typing indicator, as the feature has been gradually rolled out in Latin American countries and is now available in Europe. The new feature doesn’t require any activation in settings and cannot be disabled.
