Narrated by Lead Creative Producer Tim Lamb and other key developers, the video sheds light on this thrilling new chapter set on a single, handcrafted planet, Va’ruun’kai. This expansion shifts focus towards mystery, horror, and a stronger emphasis on melee combat. The developers aim to offer a more intimate and unsettling experience within a secluded environment.
Exploring Va’ruun’kai’s Alien Terrain
While Starfield’s base game offers a vast, open galaxy, Shattered Space narrows its scope to a self-contained world with unique challenges. Va’ruun’kai, the homeworld of House Va’ruun, is central to this expansion. Isolated from the rest of the Settled Systems, this faction has long been shrouded in mystery. Bethesda’s goal was to create an expansion reminiscent of their previous DLCs, with more handcrafted locations that feel alien and eerie.
The story centers entirely around Va’ruun’kai and its capital city, Dazra. Every side mission, location, and character encountered adds layers to the tragedy of the Vortex Incident—a catastrophic event where a secret experiment involving Grav-Drive technology tore a hole in space-time. A massive portion of Dazra was swallowed by the resulting vortex, leaving its people desperate, their leader missing, and their government in disarray.
Aftermath of the Vortex Incident
According to WCCF Tech, the expansion’s plot kicks off just weeks after the Vortex Incident. Dazra City lies in ruins, with a gaping crater where the capital once stood. The Scaled Citadel, home of House Va’ruun’s leadership, is trapped in a strange energy field, and Anasko Va’ruun, the faction’s leader, is missing. In his absence, the lesser Houses of Va’ruun are locked in a power struggle, fighting for control over the future of their people. Players will have to navigate these political tensions while uncovering the truth of what led to the experiment’s failure.
Mystery, Horror, and Combat
The expansion introduces a darker, more claustrophobic atmosphere compared to the base game. Va’ruun’kai’s extraterrestrial landscape is fraught with danger, as reality itself begins to break down. Gravity anomalies and otherworldly creatures, such as the terrifying Vortex Horror, add an element of survival horror. Players must balance navigating these threats with the more chaotic, close-quarters combat introduced in Shattered Space. Unlike the base game’s emphasis on long-range gunfights, this expansion pushes players towards melee combat, increasing the intensity of each encounter.
