Airbnb is adding features that help people meet and stay connected with others who book the same activity. The changes aim to make travel more social without forcing users into public profiles. Airbnb also improved maps and searching to help travelers find places and activities near a listing. The updates are from Airbnb’s recent product releases and its revamp of the app.
The new social features let people share basic profile details with other guests for a single experience. When a guest signs up for an experience, they will see a prompt to share a name, a profile picture, and the city they are from. If a guest does not opt in, other participants will only see a limited view chosen by that guest. After the activity ends, people can send a message request to those they met and then exchange photos or plans if both sides agree. Airbnb will collect connections in a new tab on the guest profile so users can reconnect later. These steps mirror Airbnb earlier shift to make Experiences a stronger social product.
Meet other travelers
Airbnb is launching a feature to disclose who else is attending an Experience. The hope is to make it simple to meet someone with like-minded interests. Hosts and organizers will know only the names and addresses of guests when users choose to opt in. If a guest wishes not to be public, he or she can opt out when the time is available and still attend the event. The application will also keep track of accepted contacts so that people can meet each other after a trip. Airbnb said it added controls so users can block or report contacts that make them feel uneasy.
Smarter search results
Airbnb also changed search to surface listings that a user might have missed when they set strict filters. The company will show additional suggestions near the top of search results in a few scrollable lists. One list will include homes that are just outside a price range. Another list will show places that lack a selected amenity but still otherwise match the request. A third list will highlight nearby neighborhoods that meet the core criteria. Airbnb said this is based on observed user behavior, where people often widen their filters after seeing initial results. The change is meant to save time and to surface options that might lead to a booking.
Maps that help plan
The Maps view now highlights points of interest around a chosen property. Travelers can tap a landmark, a museum, or a restaurant on the map to see a short description and the distance from the listing. That helps guests compare how well different neighborhoods fit their plans. The feature is useful when a traveler values local access over a lower nightly price. Airbnb designed the map updates to keep more planning inside the app rather than forcing guests to jump to other travel sites.
AI assistant expansion
Airbnb first rolled out an AI-powered customer service assistant in the United States earlier this year. With this release, the assistant will expand to Mexico and Canada and support English, Spanish, and French. The bot will provide answers that draw on a guest’s past profile bookings and reservation details. The agent will also surface quick action cards so users can cancel change dates or request help using the same conversation. Airbnb said the assistant aims to reduce friction and speed common tasks while keeping humans available for complex cases.
