Instagram has set a new demand on Friday that a user will have to have a publicly business on Instagram with at least 1,000 followers to be able to broadcast with the naked eye. The new change will be usable right away and will be applicable to all users across the world. Accounts, which fail to fulfill these requirements, will be presented with a notification that larger public profiles will no longer be able to access live video.

What Has Changed

The live video option is not new on Instagram since any account holder can use the feature, despite the account size and privacy settings. With the new policy, only the profiles that are set as public and have acquired the 1,000 followers mark will be able to go live. When users attempt to go live without satisfying these requirements, they will receive a message that their account should be public, and it must be followed by at least 1,000 users to use the feature.

Meta clarified that the new patch will soon help improve the quality of all live content on Instagram. The creators that the platform is looking to build relationships with have already established an audience, and this is because of the fact that the platform is looking to decrease broadcasts on a low view-count, another way of trying to create greater reliability on the part of the viewer. The company further added that broadcasting, in general, involves heavy costs of infrastructure and therefore focusing more on broadcasting bigger ones can keep the cost in control without downplaying the user experience.

Impact on Small Creators and Casual Users

Smaller creators and users who are merely used to enjoying going live with friends and streaming will be impacted at once. Users with below 1,000 followers will not be able to access the live till they develop their following. Other members of the community argue through social media by stating that they feel frustrated and requesting the rule to be reversed. Such development can drive certain micro-influencers to other platforms where anyone can still watch them live.

Instagram’s move aligns its requirements more closely with TikTok, which also requires 1,000 followers to unlock live streaming. YouTube takes a more lenient approach by allowing channels with as few as 50 subscribers to go live. Twitter, meanwhile, has not set a formal follower minimum for live broadcasts but has other verification steps for its professional live tools.

How to Reach 1,000 Followers

Individuals looking to get their life back can put emphasis on consistency of content, engagement with followers, and use of hashtags. Work with other content creators and involve them in popular challenges to reach more people. The insights and analytics provided on Instagram by the platform about business and creator accounts also guide on the best time to make a post and the topics of interest by the target audience.

Protecting Viewer Experience

By limiting live broadcasts to larger public accounts, Instagram hopes to deliver more engaging and reliable live streams. Viewers will benefit from higher-quality production and host accountability. Accounts with established follower bases are more likely to maintain consistent schedules and to moderate chat effectively.

The platform may revisit the requirement as it gathers feedback and data. If the change leads to stronger engagement on live videos, Meta could explore ways to support smaller creators with targeted live features or trial access periods. For now, users under the threshold can still engage with others’ live streams, view stories, and post regular content.

Balancing Costs and Creativity

Instagram’s update reflects a broader tension between open creativity and operational costs. Live video demands real-time server resources and moderation efforts. By narrowing live privileges to accounts that have demonstrated sustained interest from their community, Instagram seeks to balance cost management with platform growth. Feedback from users and creators may influence policy adjustments. Instagram has not ruled out future changes to live requirements. Those affected are encouraged to build their followings and to explore Instagram’s Creator tools, which offer tips on audience development.
