Meta will begin using public posts and comments from people over eighteen to train its artificial intelligence models. The change takes effect on May 27, 2025. The data used includes posts, photos, captions, and comments you make on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads. Meta says it will also learn from how you use its AI features.

You Have the Right to Object

Meta says you can tell them you do not want your public content or AI interactions to help train their AI systems. If you object before May 27, Meta will send you a confirmation email. After that date, you will not be able to opt out. Once you receive confirmation, Meta will stop using your public content and AI feature activity for AI training going forward.

Consumer Groups Raise Concerns

The European Consumer Organisation and its Spanish member say this policy may break data protection and digital rights rules. They worry it could set a bad example for other tech firms. They say people did not give clear permission for a company to use their public posts and AI activity in this way.

How to Opt Out in Instagram

You can stop Meta from using your public content for AI training by following a simple process in the Instagram app. Open the app and go to your profile. Tap the three lines at the top right and choose the Privacy Center. Look for the note about AI and select the option to object. Then tap Submit. You will get an email from Meta to confirm your choice. Once you confirm you will not need to do anything again for that account.

What Happens After You Opt Out

After you confirm Meta will no longer use your public posts, comments, or AI features use to improve its generative AI models. Private messages remain safe and are not used unless you share them with Meta’s AI features. If you add extra accounts under the Accounts Center, each will need its own opt-out request. Meta may still process community posts containing your image or name if another user shares them.

Why This Matters to You

Online platforms often use public data to teach their systems. Meta’s announcement shows how fast these practices are spreading. By choosing to opt out, you take control of how your own content shapes tomorrow’s AI tools. Staying informed helps you decide what you share and how you protect your personal information.
