The new iPhone 16 will be unveiled next Monday, September 9, with a special focus on its integration with Apple Intelligence and iOS 18. However, important updates are also expected in other areas such as photography and video recording. The most significant changes are anticipated in the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models.

According to 9to5Mac, video recording on the Pro versions of the iPhone 16 is set to make a significant leap, as they are expected to capture 4K video at 120 frames per second. If confirmed, this will be a particularly exciting feature for content creators.

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max currently support 4K video recording at 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. Therefore, the ability to record at 120 FPS on the iPhone 16 Pro would be a significant enhancement. But the news doesn’t stop there.

According to the report, Apple is expected to offer the option to record ProRes 4K video at 120 frames per second when the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are connected to external storage media. For comparison, this option is currently limited to 60 FPS on the iPhone 15 Pro.

Another update will affect QuickTake videos, which are recorded from Photo mode. These videos will upgrade from 1080p (Full HD) to 4K. It is not clear whether this improvement will be exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max or if it will also be available for the standard and Plus models. However, since it is a relatively minor change, it is possible that it could be included in all four models.

Additionally, Apple is rumored to have experimented with 8K video recording on the iPhone 16 Pro.

The same 9to5Mac report suggests that Apple has experimented with recording 8K videos on the iPhone 16 Pro. However, it is unclear whether this was just a test or if this feature might eventually be available on the devices. The main obstacle to its implementation appears to be a limitation in the zoom capabilities. As a result, it is speculated that Apple might include this feature in the iPhone 17, which is expected to have updated sensors.

Another interesting detail is that, unlike the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are expected to feature the same rear camera module. This change is not only due to the introduction of a new 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens but also because both models will include the 5x telephoto lens with autofocus and a tetraprism design. In the 2023 models, this telephoto lens was exclusive to the Pro Max.

Additional new features for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max cameras may include support for the JPEG-XL format, the ability to pause video recording from the native camera, and the reduction of wind noise in outdoor filming. Furthermore, the new capture button is expected to be compatible with third-party camera apps.
