Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has stated that if he wins the election, he will assign tech billionaire Elon Musk to head a committee responsible for reviewing U.S. government spending. Trump stated that he wants to establish “a commission on government efficiency.”

The commission should carry out a “complete financial and performance review of the entire federal government” and suggest “drastic reforms,” according to the 78-year-old Republican in a speech in New York. This commission was recommended by Musk.
“If he has the time, he will do it well. He has agreed to do it,” Trump said in response to the proposal. In a live conversation with Trump on his online platform X in August 2024, billionaire Musk suggested creating a commission to limit U.S. government spending.
How Musk Reacts to the Offer
Tesla CEO Musk is backing Trump in the U.S. presidential election campaign. He frequently campaigns against the Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, who is running against Trump in the election on November 5, 2024.
In response, Musk wrote on X: “I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises. No pay, no title, and no recognition.” During the live conversation with Trump, Musk had previously stated that such a commission should ensure taxpayer money is spent “in a good way” and offered his “help” with the project.
Trump Wants Tariffs on Foreign Products
Trump delivered a speech in New York outlining his economic policy plans. The former president aims to reintroduce tariffs on foreign products. During his first term in office, Trump initiated trade conflicts with China and the European Union.
“America will encourage domestic production rather than punish it,” he said in New York. Economists worry that broad-based tariffs could drive inflation up again, with the increased costs being passed on to consumers.
Trump dismissed this criticism of his proposals. “Foreign countries will pay us hundreds of billions of dollars, which will reduce the deficit and lower inflation.” He claimed that many opponents of tariffs are employed by other countries.
