As covered by The Tech Basic earlier Intel has formally introduced its new product line, the Luna Lake series, the Intel Core Ultra 200V, during the IFA show in Berlin. These new chips are designed for thin-and-light AI-based PCs including gaming handhelds and laptops. Intel is challenging its rivals in the Internet and other processors such that Apple silicon and the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite by claiming to have the “fastest built-in GPU in the industry. ”

New Lunar Lake chips will combine CPU cores, up to 32 gigabytes of RAM, and Intel’s latest Arc Xe2 Battlemage GPU in one bundle. This decreases the need for having a number of memory modules and GPUs, making these chips good for portability like gaming laptops and handhelds. More than 80 devices from over 20 brands are set to implement the fresh Core Ultra 200V chips: the MSI Claw 8 AI+ handheld gaming PC is planned to be unveiled among them.

Unmatched Gaming Performance and AI Capabilities

Intel’s new chips are designed integrated with a myriad of AI and gaming capabilities. The Core Ultra 200V processor is equipped with an AI-dedicated Neural Processing Unit while its integrated Arc 140V GPU is based on Intel’s new Battlemage Xe2 class. This GPU has eight Xe2 cores which include Intel’s vector units and XMX matrix cores for AI computations and it also has eight hardware ray tracing cores.

According to Intel, the Arc 140V GPU is capable of offering 30% higher efficiency than the previous Meteor Lake GPUs, although Cyberpunk 2077 or Hogwarts Legacy gaming performance may increase by as much as 50%. However, it is worth noting that Intel spent its time benchmarking nearly 50 games, and the resulting outcome is that the Core Ultra 200V GPU is 68% faster than the Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite X1E-84-100 and 16% faster than the AMD Ryzen 9 HX 370. For example, it is capable of running Diablo 4 at 66 frames per second and Doom Eternal at 71 frames per second in a 1080p gaming test and it does all this at a lower power consumption than other machines in its class.

Improved Efficiency and Bold Claims on CPU Performance

In addition to gaming, Intel has claimed considerable improvement in power management for Lunar Lake chips. In a demo of Dota 2 the Intel Core Ultra 200V ran on only 29.1 watts, while AMD on 42 watts and Qualcomm at 58.8 watts, this show the power-saving view of additional battery life in portable devices.

The CPU cores that are available in the Core Ultra 200V range also have enhancements. Intel boasts four performance-oriented P-Cores and four low-power E-Cores to deliver a 14% boost in IPC and a 15% improvement in the performance/watt ratio over the previous Meteor Lake design. The new E-Cores are 1,8x faster than the corresponding cores in the previous generation and Intel says that the Lunar Lake is the most power-efficient line of x86 processors ever.

Release Date and Market Impact

The Intel Core Ultra 200V chips will be released starting September 24, 2024, but devices based on the new chip will start to take pre-orders from September 3, 2024. Thus, as Intel is a direct competitor with Apple and Qualcomm in the AI and gaming laptop segments, the line could set new thin and light laptop benchmarks with the Lunar Lake roster. However, real-world performance will be tested once the devices with the new Core Ultra 200V are available.
