Huawei is about to become the first company to launch a mobile phone that folds into three parts, also known as a tri-fold or triple foldable. The Chinese brand has announced an event on September 10, just one day after the iPhone 16 is presented. Richard Yu, head of Huawei’s consumer business division, mentioned on his Weibo account that the new device “will be epoch-making.”

Huawei’s invitation to the launch doesn’t provide many details. Although the company hasn’t explicitly mentioned the triple foldable namely Huawei Mate XT, a leaked image from Ice Universe shows a product folded into three sections, with reflections similar to a smartphone screen.

Huawei is not the only company working on a triple-folding concept. Oppo is also developing a similar device, though there is no news yet on when it might be unveiled.

In Huawei’s case, the existence of a triple-folding phone has long been known. Richard Yu, the company’s consumer business head, has been photographed using the device in public multiple times. One of the earliest images showed him using it as a tablet on an airplane, and he has also been seen with the phone completely closed.

What Is Huawei’s New Triple Foldable Like?

So far, no specific details have been leaked about the specifications of Huawei’s Mate XT. From the images that have surfaced, the device appears to feature a double-hinge system and a book-like format, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and other foldables.

When closed, the outer screen functions like a regular phone. The dual-folding system greatly expands its versatility. Users won’t always need to open the phone completely; the second hinge provides access to an internal screen comparable in size to other foldables. For a tablet-like experience, users can open the first hinge to reveal an additional screen section, which is also used as the outer panel when the device is fully closed.

Huawei’s Mate XT features a circular camera module on the back, similar to previous models like the Mate X3. The leaked images reveal a compact design with no visible gaps between the folds when the panel is closed. The company has reportedly spent 5 years developing this technology. Many details about Huawei’s triple foldable remain unknown, and we will need to wait a few more days for more information. Besides the tri-fold, Bloomberg suggests that Huawei might also announce updates related to its Aito line of electric cars. We will keep an eye on the latest developments.
